ATLANTA, GEORGIA: In a dramatic turn of events, a judge in Georgie ruled that the district attorney Fani Willis can proceed with the prosecution of Donald Trump for his alleged attempts to undermine the 2020 presidential election in the state.

However, the ruling by judge Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the case, ordered the deputy to step down for Willis to continue, according to CNN

Willis' deputy Nathan Wade was hired to investigate Trump for the Georgia election interference case.

Judge sharply criticized Fani Willis' conduct

The ruling came after hearings veered into Willis' romantic relationship with her top deputy Wade who is also a special prosecutor in the case.

"The court therefore concludes that the prosecution of this case cannot proceed until the state selects one of two options," McAfee wrote on Friday, March 15.

"The district attorney may choose to step aside, along with the whole of her office, and refer the prosecution to the prosecuting attorneys’ council for reassignment," McAfee added.

The judge added that alternatively, the Fulton County DA could withdraw “allowing the district attorney, the defendants, and the public to move forward without his presence or remuneration distracting from and potentially compromising the merits of this case.”

Avoiding a complete removal of Willis and her office, the ruling offered relief for her. However, it also deals a blow to Willis' credibility, with judge issuing a scathing critique of her conduct during the multi-day hearing.

Did Fani Willis have a conflict of interest in the election case?

The issue revolved around whether the district attorney's relationship with Wade constituted a conflict of interest.

In January, Michael Roman, one of the 14 defendants in the case filed a motion seeking Willis to be disqualified from leading the case due to her personal relationship with the top deputy.

The romantic involvement remained undisclosed until Roman filed the motion. Willis and Wade eventually admitted their relationship and claimed that it began after he was assigned to work on the Trump case in 2022.

However, McAfee stated that "neither side was able to conclusively establish by a preponderance of the evidence when the relationship evolved into a romantic one."

Internet angry as Fani Willis is not disqualified from continuing with Donald Trump's election case

After McAfee ruled Willis could continue on the election subversion case against Trump, netizens rallied to express their disappointment with the ruling.

"So after all that, Fani Willis will not be removed from the Trump case. She was never going to be removed. Trump simply does not have a magic wand. Now onto Trump’s criminal trials and prison," a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"He's not a good judge, he doesn't know how to judge a case. Fani Willis and her boyfriend Nathan cannot stay on the same case, this is not a family business. Both of them should be dismissed from the case. Because they have already dented the case," another user tweeted.

"She should be disbarred. There’s no way that she is smart or professional enough to be a lawyer," a user remarked and another user wrote, "Case is poisoned beyond recovery."
