LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Cillian Murphy bagged his first-ever Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10.

The Irish actor took home the Best Actor trophy for his performance as the father of the atomic bomb, nuclear physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer’.

In the race, Murphy, a first-time Oscar nominee, faced strong contenders like Bradley Cooper for 'Maestro', Colman Domingo for 'Rustin', Paul Giamatti for 'The Holdovers', and Jeffrey Wright for 'American Fiction'.

Cillian Murphy calls 'Oppenheimer' the 'wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey'

As monumental as Murphy’s work in the Oppenheimer biopic was, his acceptance speech was similarly memorable.

Admitting he was feeling "a little overwhelmed" at the monumental feat, the actor thanked Nolan, who took the Oscar for Best Director for 'Oppenheimer', saying, "It's been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you've taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say."

He added, "Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member, on Oppenheimer; you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly," as per PEOPLE Magazine.

The Cork, Ireland-born actor then continued to thank his "incredible team" and his family and said, "I love you so much, and I'm a very proud Irish man standing here tonight."

His wife of two decades, Yvonne McGuinness, and their sons Malachy, 18, and Aran, 16, were sitting in the audience.

"We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb," continued Murphy, before asserting, "And for better or for worse, we're all living in Oppenheimer's world, so I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere."
