WASHINGTON, DC: On November 7, President Joe Biden addressed the nation for the first time since the surprising outcome of the 2024 election, where his running mate, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, lost to Donald Trump.

Biden, who appeared to have regained his clarity and energy in his speech, conveyed a message of unity and resilience, despite the disappointing defeat.

Social media responds to Joe Biden's 'most composed' address in years

Many on social media were quick to comment that Joe Biden looked "the happiest" and most composed he had in years, with some even calling it the first “completely coherent” address he’d delivered in a long time.

"Biden looks the happiest he has ever been during his presidency," one added.

A user wrote, "He just gave his first completely coherent speech in four years. One last FU to Obama, Pelosi, and Kamala."

Another user replied, "Tell me you voted for President Trump without telling me."

One added, "Biden suddenly loses his Dementia & stupidity. Comes to his senses and joins MAGA."

Someone else commented, "I don't know, Joe was glowing when he put on that MAGA hat lol."

Another replied, "That’s the face of a man who has had his revenge,"

In a tone that was both somber and hopeful, President Joe Biden called the loss a "setback" but reassured Americans that the country would experience a "peaceful and orderly transition" of power.

“Setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgivable. A defeat does not mean we are defeated. We accept the choice the country made,” Biden said. His remarks underscored his belief that setbacks are part of the democratic process, yet perseverance is key.

Biden also took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of unity, urging Americans not to view each other as "adversaries," but rather as “fellow Americans.”

He reminded the nation of the principles upon which the United States was built, saying, “For over 200 years, we’ve carried out the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world.” He celebrated the peaceful nature of the electoral process, where “the will of the people always prevails,” regardless of the election’s outcome.

Joe Biden honors Kamala Harris for her 'inspiring campaign' and unwavering character

The President also paid tribute to Kamala Harris, who, despite the loss, ran what Joe Biden described as an "inspiring campaign." Reflecting on his own long political career, Biden praised his running mate for her unwavering character and determination.

“She ran an inspiring campaign, and everyone got to see something that I learned early on to respect so much — her character,” Biden said. “She has a backbone like a ramrod, she has great character, true character. She gave her whole heart and effort, and she and her entire team should be proud of the campaign they ran.”

Biden's remarks came just days after he had dropped out of the race himself, having chosen to endorse Harris as his successor. He remarked on November 6 that selecting her as his running mate was "the best decision" he made during his political career.

Joe Biden defends electoral integrity and reaffirms trust in democracy

In addition to reassuring the nation about the outcome of the election, Joe Biden also addressed concerns about the integrity of the electoral system. "I also hope we can lay to rest the question about the integrity of the American electoral system — it is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent. And it can be trusted, win or lose,” he said, echoing a sentiment of faith in democracy that many felt had been challenged during the election process.

Biden’s address came after, Kamala Harris made her own speech at Howard University, where she formally conceded the race. Harris acknowledged the emotional toll of the election loss but made it clear that she would never concede the underlying fight that had motivated the campaign.

“I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign,” Harris said. She emphasized that, despite the result, she fully accepted the principles of democracy, which require respecting the will of the people.
