WILMINGTON, DELAWARE: Twelve Delaware residents are now deliberating whether Hunter Biden lied about his use of illicit drugs when obtaining a gun in 2018 and then unlawfully possessed it for more than a week.

President Joe Biden’s son faces three felony counts stemming from the purchase.

Prosecutors claim Hunter lied when he checked “no” on a federal gun purchase form questioning whether he unlawfully used or was addicted to narcotics or other drugs.

Hunter Biden's battle with addiction highlighted in trial

Hunter Biden’s attorneys argue that the president’s son – who had just completed a stint in rehab – believed he was telling the truth.

If the federal jury finds Hunter guilty, it would mark the first criminal conviction of a sitting president’s child, according to The Hill.

The president recently reiterated that he would not pardon his son, if convicted. The trial, which lasted just over a week, centered around Hunter Biden’s addiction to crack cocaine.

The president and his son have been open about Hunter's struggle with addiction which grew worse after the death of his brother Beau Biden. Beau died of brain cancer in 2015.

Hunter Biden did not testify in his defense

The memoir where he detailed those struggles 'Beautiful Things' was used as key evidence and a narrative vehicle for prosecutors aiming to show that Hunter’s addiction never subsided, nor did the president’s son think it had.

Hunter Biden did not testify in his defense though jurors were instructed that they could not hold that decision against him.

During closing arguments on Monday, June 10, prosecutors contended that Hunter had “lost control” of his drug use, which they claimed started “years before” the gun purchase and “continued for months after.”

Hunter Biden’s attorneys stressed during closing statement that the president’s son did not believe he was lying on the gun form because of his recent efforts to get clean, also noting that no “actual drug use” by Hunter was witnessed in the month he bought the gun.

Hunter faces a maximum of 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines though first-time offenders are rarely given the maximum penalty.

He is also facing separate charges in California for allegedly failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes and filing false returns, which could go to trial in September.

Internet reacts as the jury could return with Hunter Biden's verdict at any time

Internet reactions have been swift and varied in Hunter Biden's gun trial. "I already know the answer. Not guilty lol," wrote one user on X.

Few hoped that the verdict would be quick. "Hopefully a quick verdict," wrote one. "No suspense here. They won’t find him guilty," suggested another.

One joked, "Get the pipe out to celebrate," referring to Hunter's crack addiction back then and potential acquittal.

"Even if he’s found guilty, I doubt he’ll get much time or probation," predicted another.

"These kinds of charges are rarely even brought to court without other charges that are worse," wrote one more.

"We all know how this will end. He will be guilty, get probation and they will sneak in that he can’t be tried for anything else on the laptop. Biden’s win!!" one claimed.
