INDIANOLA, IOWA: In a scathing rebuke, former President Donald Trump criticized a New York City judge for rejecting a request to postpone the defamation trial against him, affirming his commitment to attend his mother-in-law's funeral.

His attorney, Alina Habba, requested a one-week adjournment to Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Kaplan on the trial filed by writer E. Jean Carroll against the Republican frontrunner, scheduled to start on January 16.

Former First Lady Melania Trump's 78-year-old mother, Amalija Knavs, died on January 9, and according to the email sent to Judge Kaplan published by liberal news network Meidas Touch, the funeral will be held on January 18 in Florida.

Donald Trump says judge can do whatever he wants

Speaking to his supporters on Sunday, January 14, in Indianola in the closing pitch ahead of the Iowa caucus, Trump blasted at the judge.

"I'm going to that funeral, and this judge, whatever the hell he wants to do, let him do it. But we're going to let him do it. They could have had these trials. They could have had that trial six months ago."



 

Labeling the judge a "radical left lunatic," the White House hopeful said the decision was intended to hurt him at the polls to help President Joe Biden win the election.

Declaring he would be with his wife one way or another, Trump added, "What a disgrace that a judge would not say yes you can take a day off, there's no rush."



 

The former President, all set to face the first test of the election year on January 15 in the Hawkeye state before his mother-in-law's funeral, is expected to win with a sizeable dominance, leading to a rematch with the incumbent in November.

Internet criticizes Donald Trump

Infuriated social media users slammed the former President for "gaslighting" his supporters ahead of the Iowa caucus.

Pointing out his presence was unnecessary during the trial, social media users reminded Trump that the judge had said he was free to attend the funeral.

One user remarked, "Isn’t that what the Judge said? You can go to the funeral if you want. The Court doesn’t need your presence and will continue."



 

Another user stated, "He’s gaslighting his own supporters. He doesn’t have to be in court. He’s not required to be there."



 

"He LITERALLY doesn't have to be there for this. He can do what he wants. Blaming the judge won't fool most of us," read a third opinion.



 

A fourth user wrote, "Yup. Suuure. Trump does not have to be in the court. He’s free to go if he wants. But maga doesn’t know that."



 

"Again with the lies and misdirections and they cheer. The judge made it clear he was free to attend the funeral, his presence in court was not required, yet he spins it as if the judge said he had to be in court," one user added.



 

Another response read, "The judge just said he could speak on the following Monday. Watch him not do so. He has absolutely nothing to add, and just wants to complain."
