NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Columbia University descended into chaos this week as pro-Palestine student protesters took over parts of the campus, prompting the administration to move all classes online in an attempt to de-escalate the volatile situation, as per Fox News.

The dramatic move came after days of escalating tensions, with protesters caught on video intimidating Jewish students. In a late-night statement, university president Dr Nemat Shafik condemned the "antisemitic language" and "harassing behavior" by the protesters, who have set up an encampment on the grounds.

Statement from Columbia University president paints grim picture

The statement from Dr Nemat Shafik paints a grim picture of the situation at Columbia University. "I am deeply saddened by what is happening on our campus. Our bonds as a community have been severely tested in ways that will take a great deal of time and effort to reaffirm," she said.

Shafik acknowledged that students across various communities have expressed fears for their safety, prompting the university to take additional security measures.

Shafik condemned the use of "antisemitic language" by protesters and the "intimidating and harassing behavior on our campus."

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, she announced that all classes would be held virtually on Monday, April 22, allowing faculty and staff to work remotely if possible.

"We need a reset," she stated, urging the protesters to "sit down and talk" with those they disagree with. Shafik expressed hope that the university "will try to bring this crisis to a resolution" in the coming days.

House GOP Chair Rep Elise Stefanik, representing New York, has called for Shafik's prompt resignation in light of threats to student safety amid the ongoing protests.

Meanwhile, Business School assistant professor Shai Davidai was denied entry to the university after attempting a pro-Israel counter-protest. Davidai's refusal to comply with the university's counter-protest policies led to his exclusion from the campus, according to New York Post.
