ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN: The University of Michigan's graduation ceremony descended into chaos on Saturday, May 4, as pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the event, chanting slogans and waving flags in a dramatic demonstration that sparked outrage online.

Dozens of robe-clad student demonstrators took over parts of the commencement, unfurling banners calling for divestment from Israel and drowning out the ceremony with slogans, as per Daily Mail.

Footage from the event captured the tense moments as protesters took over parts of the ceremony. Many of the protesters, donning traditional Arabic keffiyeh hesses along with their graduation caps, could be heard yelling chants like "Palestine will live forever" and "Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest."

The protesters also unfurled banners with messages like "No universities left in Gaza." Adding to the chaos, a plane also soared above the ceremony carrying a banner stating "Free Palestine" and "divest from Israel now."

In response, another aircraft circled the area with a message declaring "We stand with Israel. Jewish lives matter."

As the protest went on, tensions escalated between the demonstrators and other graduates trying to enjoy their special day. In one video, several students can be seen shouting, "Shut the f**k up," and "You're ruining our graduation!"

University officials and law enforcement monitored the situation closely, but no arrests were made during the nearly two-hour event involving around 50 protesters.

University of Michigan incident part of growing trend of pro-Palestine protests disrupting campus events

The University of Michigan incident was part of a growing trend of pro-Palestine protests disrupting campus events across the country. Just one day earlier, the university's School of Music faced a similar demonstration during their commencement, forcing the speaker, US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, to pause multiple times.

"Ladies and gentlemen, if you can please draw your attention back to the podium," Del Toro implored the crowd as the protesters chanted.

The Associated Press reports that over 2,400 individuals have been arrested across 47 college and university campuses in connection with similar protests.

Some schools have negotiated agreements with protesters to cease demonstrations and minimize disruptions, while others have experienced tent encampments being taken down and numerous arrests as police cracked down on the protests.
