LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Bill Nye, popularly known as "The Science Guy," has been slammed online after he called for a ban on fossil fuels following the Texas flash floods that have killed over 100 people.

Appearing on a recent episode of CNN’s ‘Inside Politics,’ the TV presenter, whose full name is William Sanford Nye, claimed that neglecting the climate crisis was a major reason the natural disaster that tore through Central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend was so devastating.

He asked, “So, ‘What are we going to do about it?’ is the ancient question. And it would be to stop burning fossil fuels. When you’re in a hole, stop digging, and so on.”

Bill Nye accuses the fossil fuel industry of manipulating the US government

The science communicator further put the blame on the government for the devastation as he claimed fossil fuel companies have convinced it not to focus on climate change.

“But the fossil fuel industry has been very successful in getting organizations like the US Congress to think that it‘s really not happening,” Nye told the host, Dana Bash.

The former mechanical engineer also shared on the program that “it’s very difficult to tie any one weather event to climate change. However, the warm weather events are actually easier to tie to climate change.”

“But it will happen again, to your point,” he stressed.

Dana Bash then told Bill Nye about the current administration’s attempts to eliminate cuts to fossil fuel production in America.

The 69-year-old agreed and also noted that the government should do the opposite.

Internet slams Bill Nye's call for a ban on fossil fuels as an 'uneducated take'

Bill Nye’s remarks didn't sit well with the netizens, as one said, “You understand, don't you, that 'Science Guy' was a character he played on a TV show back in the '90s, and he's not a scientist?"

Another wrote, “A pretend scientist just blamed all erratic/uncontrollable weather on burning fossil fuels without mentioning any data. Seems legit..."

A person bluntly remarked, “That's an uneducated take. Lol,” while someone else added, “LOL, Bill Nye the science guy is out pumping propaganda. I guess the revenue from the kids show dried up.”

“Idiot. Flooding has been happening consistently throughout history in many of the same locations long before we humans started using combustible engines. My Great Grandfather died in the Vermont flood of 1927. Was that caused by fossil fuels too!!” another tweet read.

“You do know he’s an entertainment personality, not a scientist, right?” one said, criticizing Nye's remarks.
