LANSING, MICHIGAN: On Monday, July 15, the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) filed a lawsuit against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and others, according to NBC News.

They argued that the Democratic governor and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson exceeded their authority by permitting federal Veterans Affairs and Small Business Administration offices to serve as "voter registration agencies" (VRAs).

In the filing, the Trump campaign team and the RNC asserted, “Under Michigan law, the authority to make such designations rests solely with the Legislature.”

What prompted the Trump campaign and the RNC to go after Michigan’s Democratic officials?

Michigan was won by former President Donald Trump in 2016 and then it flipped for President Joe Biden in 2020, making it a crucial swing state in the upcoming November election.

The 78-year-old MAGA figurehead has consistently attempted to cast doubt on election processes before they occur, making unfounded claims to contest the results after losing the 2020 election.

The lawsuit filed on Monday by Trump's campaign echoed concerns about the integrity of the voting process.

"The RNC and its members are concerned that Defendants’ failure to comply with Michigan statutes governing VRA designation undermines the integrity of elections by increasing the opportunity for individuals to register to vote even though they are ineligible to do so, and by sowing confusion regarding whether the agencies purporting to offer assistance in registering voters are doing so in accordance with applicable law," says the lawsuit, as reported by MLive.com.

Furthermore, the court filings contend that the "SBA and VA’s continued unlawful operation as VRAs have caused economic, financial, and political injury to the Plaintiffs, including by forcing them to allocate additional resources and misallocate their scarce resources in ways they otherwise would not have."

The lawsuit sought not only a "permanent injunction preventing the State Defendants from designating any VRAs without explicit authorization from the Michigan Legislature," but also a ruling that would declare the action illegal.
