'Nice try': Internet mocks Gavin Newsom as he tries to spin Joe Biden’s age as his asset and reason why he’s 'so successful’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In an eyebrow-raising interview aired on NBC's 'Meet the Press' on Sunday, February 25, California Governor Gavin Newsom sought to reframe the narrative surrounding President Biden's age.

Newsom, 56, known for his outspoken nature, contended that Biden's octogenarian status, at 81, is not a liability but a strength that has contributed to his success. “I’ve seen him up close, I’ve seen him from afar, but here’s my point: It’s because of his age that he’s been so successful," Newsom declared.

With Biden being the oldest president in US history and potentially serving until he reaches 86, Newsom’s remarks come amid widespread concerns among voters regarding the president's age.

Gavin Newsom's loyalty to President Joe Biden

Gavin Newsom, who has himself been the subject of presidential speculation, categorically ruled out any intention to run in 2024, reaffirming his loyalty to Biden. “It’s not even an interesting conversation,” he said, categorically ruling out his candidacy. “By the way, I think it’s a damning conversation frankly the other side wants us to have," he added.

While some Democrats have expressed reservations about Biden’s chances in a potential rematch with former president Donald Trump, Newsom remained optimistic, asserting that Democrats continue to outperform and highlighting Biden's “record of accomplishments…the likes of which we couldn’t have dreamt.”

In response to Trump's persistent calls for a debate, Newsom welcomed the idea, expressing confidence in Biden's ability to prevail once again. However, he criticized Trump's taunts as "weakness masquerading as strength," highlighting Trump's own reluctance to debate during his primary campaign.

“No. Well, I think [Trump is] weakness masquerading as strength. I think he’s more unhinged,” Newsom said, before adding, “He’s less interesting than he was even a few years ago.”

“Democrats are stronger, we’re winning. ’18, ’20, ’22, ’23,” he argued. “We continue to outperform and Donald Trump is a big part of that," Newsom added.

As discussions about the upcoming 2024 debates unfold, tensions between the Republican National Committee and the Commission on Presidential Debates raise uncertainties about the events' occurrence.

Addressing contentious issues within the Democratic Party, Newsom navigated questions regarding Rep Rashida Tlaib’s recent call for Michigan Democrats to vote uncommitted in protest of Biden's handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“I have great respect — people have differences of opinion,” Newsom said. “I deeply am mindful about the humanitarian crisis and that’s what she’s expressing. As it relates to Biden and as it relates to this primary, it’s not even a close bet or call,” the Governor added.

On the international front, Newsom criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance, saying he was “doubling down on stupid” by “walking away” from potential solutions to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Amid the political discourse, Newsom’s super PAC, Campaign for Democracy, is set to launch an advertisement in Tennessee targeting Republicans over abortion policies.

According to the New York Post, the ad shows a woman screaming while handcuffed to a hospital bed. “Republicans want to criminalize young women who travel to receive the reproductive care they need," a narrator alleges.

Gavin Newsom mocked on social media

However, Newsom faced backlash on social media following his remarks about Biden's age.

"Nice try... lol," one posted on X.

"Laughable. They will say or do anything to get and maintain power," another offered.

"It's bad and you know it," someone else added.

"This is so over the top you know he is lying," another reacted.
