LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In 2024's first episode of 'Real Time with Bill Maher', the host engaged in a conversation with California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Bill Maher says he has been trying to get Gov Gavin Newsom's run for president for a long time

Maher began the conversation by praising Newsom's performance in a recent debate against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Expressing his longstanding belief in the California Gov's potential, the host stated, "I always said you make a great case... I'm trying to get this guy to run for president for a long time. He looks like he'd be very good at it."

His endorsement highlighted Newsom's ability to present a compelling argument and fueled the discussion about the Governor's political future.

Maher appreciated Newsom's assertive nature, describing, "He looks like he'd be very good at it what I liked with that also is you're...you're kind of mean. We need that, you know when you need to be, not over the top."

The conversation took a turn when the politician shared his recent appearance on KBLA, a progressive African-American-owned station, where he discussed his potential presidential run with friend and station investor Tavis Smiley.

As highlighted by Maher, Smiley expressed reservations about Newsom's electability, stating, "I don't think he could win. He's too progressive coming from this state, and what he's done in this state to win in any Southern State, any Red State."

Later, the duo discussed housing, with Maher expressing criticism over the excessive number of permits needed to initiate new construction projects in San Francisco, especially considering the ongoing housing crisis in the state.

In response, Newsom highlighted the establishment of his housing accountability unit and mentioned taking legal action against Huntington Beach to compel compliance. He emphasized the frequency of such occurrences, stating, "These things happen too often."

Netizens believe Bill Maher has some major blind spots when it comes to Gavin Newsom

While Maher seemed to be quite positive about Newsom's future as a potential presidential candidate, his viewers seemed to disagree with his stance over the qualities of the California Gov, as seen through the comments left under the YouTube video of the episode.

One wrote, "Such hypocrisy," while another said, "Just when you think Bill is starting to come around..... seems to have some major blind spots."

"Bill is drooling over him and can’t think straight," remarked a person, and someone else added, "I want to like Bill, he seems so smart and funny - then this s**t happens."

An individual stated, "The crazy part is Newsom actually believes what he says," taking a dig at Newsom.
