Mike Johnson trolled as he slams Democrats after Senate rejected Alejandro Mayorkas' impeachment charges
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The impeachment articles against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas were dropped by the Senate after a short trial on Wednesday, April 17, CBS News reported.
The upper house was forced to take up the matter after House Speaker Mike Johnson had signed the articles on Monday.
During the 3-hour long proceeding, the Senate's 51-member Democratic majority voted for dismissal on the ground that the charges were unconstitutional over the objections of the GOP members.
This concluded the months-long effort of Republican legislators to remove Mayorkas from office for "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" and a "breach of public trust."
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated in the evening, "We felt very strongly that we had to set a precedent that impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements. If we allowed that to happen, it would set a disastrous precedent for Congress — could throw our system of checks and balances into cycles of chaos."
Speaker House Mike Johnson issues a joint statement
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Johnson shared a joint statement on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and Representative Elise Stefanik.
"By voting unanimously to bypass their constitutional responsibility, every single Senate Democrat has issued their full endorsement of the Biden Administration’s dangerous open border policies. Secretary Mayorkas alongside President Biden has used nearly every tool at his disposal to engineer the greatest humanitarian and national security catastrophe at our borders in American history," it read.
"Tragically, Senate Democrats don’t believe this catastrophe merits their time or a discussion on the Senate floor. Instead, they’re signaling to millions demanding accountability that the cabinet official directly responsible for this disaster – who has ignored the law and misled Congress repeatedly – is above reproach. The American people will hold Senate Democrats accountable for this shameful display," he added.
