NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr claimed a worm had once entered his head and eaten a part of his brain, according to a report published by the New York Times on Wednesday, May 8.

The 70-year-old had first opened up about the incident during a 2012 deposition regarding his divorce from his second wife Mary Richardson Kennedy.

How did RFK Jr discover the worm in his brain?

Robert Kennedy Jr reportedly experienced severe memory loss and mental fogginess in 2010 and sought help from neurologists familiar with the medical history of his uncle, the late Senator Ted Kennedy, who had died of brain cancer the previous year.

It was then that a doctor from New York reviewed a scan of his brain and said that the issues could be “caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died,” shared the politician.

The New York Times shared that Kennedy Jr also suffered from mercury poisoning at the same time, which can result in neurological issues like loss of peripheral vision and muscle weakness, as well as issues with movement, hearing and speech, and memory loss.

He further went through a decades-long battle with atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat, but believes to have overcome the ailment.

Statement from Robert Kennedy Jr's campaign

When asked about the health issues of the candidate, Stefanie Spear, a spokesperson for Kennedy Jr’s campaign, told CNN that he had “traveled extensively in Africa, South America and Asia” on account of his work as an environmental advocate, and had contracted a parasite in one of those trips.

Taking a shot at the ages of incumbent Joe Biden, 81, and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, 77, she added, "The issue was resolved more than 10 years ago and he is in robust physical and mental health. Questioning Mr Kennedy’s health is a hilarious suggestion, given his competition."
