ATHENS, GEORGIA: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) sparked controversy on social media as he condemned President Joe Biden's handling of the border crisis in the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of University of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant.

Tragic incidents ignite criticism against Joe Biden

The 22-year-old victim was found by university police after failing to return from a run on campus, with visible injuries and pronounced dead from blunt force trauma. The accused, Jose Antonio Ibarra, hailing from Venezuela, has brought the issue of illegal immigration to the forefront once again.

In a separate incident, Maryland police charged Nilson Trejo-Granados of El Salvador, another illegal immigrant, with the murder of a 2-year-old child. Trejo-Granados, with a prior record, had been ordered out of the country by a DOJ immigration judge in 2022. These tragic deaths have intensified criticism of Biden's border policies amid record-high migrant encounters.

In a scathing post on social media, Rep. Jordan lamented Riley's death, saying it could have been prevented through proper deportation measures for criminal offenders.

"Laken Riley’s death could have been avoided if: -The illegal alien who killed her was deported when he first arrived. -Her killer was deported after his first arrest. -Or her killer was deported after he had another arrest warrant. But Joe Biden doesn’t care," Jordan wrote Wednesday in a post on X.

Social media backlash

However, his remarks drew backlash from Biden supporters, who accused him of politicizing the issue.

"Hunter Biden hearing not going well, is this all you got?" one posted on X.

"Nope...this falls on YOUR hands too! Shut the border down or shut the government down NOW!" another wrote.

"As a lawmaker, what is your plan beyond social media posts?" someone else asked.

"You should be in jail!!!" a comment read.

"Could have been prevented if Congress passed the Senate Border and immigration bill. It is getting a little boring with all you GOP going about all the awful things going on with the border - and Congress taking a two-week vacation," another offered.

Amid mounting pressure, President Biden gave a speech on crime reduction efforts, emphasizing public safety as a top priority. Notably absent from his address, however, was any mention of Riley's death, raising questions about the administration's stance on the border crisis.

Calls for Democratic action

Former White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield urged Democrats to adopt a more aggressive approach in addressing crime, acknowledging public concerns while cautioning against demonizing immigrants.

“It is tough for Democrats and I think it’s smart for Democrats to be more aggressive on it because people are feeling frightened now. I don’t subscribe to the mayor’s language. I don’t subscribe to the Trump vision of America as a decaying wasteland where packs of people are running wild, committing crime but it is true that people across the country, particularly in cities, are concerned about crime,” Bedingfield said during an appearance on CNN.

“It is smart for Democrats to be more aggressive about it, to be more responsive to what people are feeling,” Bedingfield insisted. She added, “Where I think it gets dangerous is when you veer into the demagoguery and the bashing immigrants and making immigrants scapegoats know that, that I don’t believe is where the Democratic Party should be. But I do think taking on this issue of crime, being tougher, it is a good thing for Democrats and will run out to their effect.”
