'It's not an easy gig': 'The View's Whoopi Goldberg defends Jo Koy amid backlash following Golden Globes
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The Golden Globe Awards were all over the headlines but comedian Jo Koy in particular made a huge splash as the host of the prestigious awards.
Koy’s hosting was met with backlash and in a recent report by The Guardian, Koy also responded to the backlash, admitting that he “felt bad.”
The following day, ‘The View’ host briefly discussed the Golden Globes, with a focus on Koy, as host and moderator Whoopi Goldberg defended the comedian and expressed just how much she liked his work, and how hosting awards is “not an easy gig.”
Whoopi Goldberg backs Jo Koy
‘The View’ host Whoopi Goldberg announced the topic to the rest of the panel and said, “So last night apparently were the Golden Globes. With the usual star-studded audience, champagne flowing, but for the first time standup comedian Jo Koy took on the hosting duties, and it was a rough room for him. Take a look.”
‘The View’ then played a few clips of Jo Koy’s jokes at the Golden Globes which included movies like ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie,’ and also Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and the camera focussed on Swift looking not-so-thrilled.
After the clip ended, Goldberg said, “This is what I'll tell you. These hosting gigs are brutal. They're just brutal. If you don't know the room, if you've not been in these rooms before, and you're sort of thrust out there, it's hit or miss. Now I love Jo Koy. He…to me, he makes me just crazy because he's funny.”
Goldberg continued, “I don't know whether it was the room or if it was the jokes. I didn't get to see it, but I do know he is as good as it gets when it comes to standups. It is not an easy gig."
She added, "If you read any of the reviews of some of the gigs that I have had where they've just, you know, wished me into the cornfields, just, you know, die on the vine. I mean, it's not an easy gig.”
Ana Navarro shares her take on Jo Koy
Following Whoopi Goldberg's remarks, 'The View' co-host Ana Navarro, who tuned in for the Golden Globes, shared her perspective on Jo Koy, stating, "I did watch it. He didn't... he wasn't funny to me."
Sara Haines was next to chime in on Koy, “I love Jo Koy and the whole time I was nervous for him because I think he's so funny. He's kind and good and all the things."
Haines also said, "What bothers me is, get a sense of humor. We need to protect these national treasures called our comedians because life needs them. We need to stop binding them in, fencing them in, and in that room, Jo Koy is punching up. No one feels sorry. Just smile.”
