James Blunt reveals 'saddest' reason he asked late 'best friend' Carrie Fisher to be his son's godmother

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: James Blunt opens up about his emotional bond with the late Carrie Fisher and why he chose her as his son's godmother.
The 'You’re Beautiful' singer and the 'Star Wars' actress first grew close in the early 2000s, when Blunt moved into her Los Angeles home to record his debut album, 'Back to Bedlam'.
James Blunt hoped Carrie Fisher would 'look after herself' as godmother to his son
Over time, their friendship deepened, and James Blunt asked Carrie Fisher to be the godmother to his first child with wife Sofia. He also named singer Ed Sheeran as the godfather.

Blunt said he shared everything with Fisher, including when he met his wife and when they picked out engagement rings.
"She’s godmother to my child. I was with her the day before she died, and it was very, very sad,” Blunt told People.
He admitted his decision came with hopes that Fisher would take better care of her health.
“What was saddest, I suppose, is how I asked her to be godmother to my child, saying, ‘I’m asking you to do this in the hope that you’ll look after yourself a little bit better.’ And she didn’t, really,” added Blunt.
Carrie Fisher died in December 2016 at age 60 after suffering cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, died the following day at 84.
Carrie Fisher opened her home to James Blunt before they ever spoke
Their friendship started when James Blunt was dating a family friend of Carrie Fisher’s and joined her for lunch in London.
Blunt has also honored the memory of his late friend with the song 'Dark Thought', featured on his 2023 album 'Who We Used to Be'.
Blunt reflected more on their relationship in his 2023 memoir 'Loosely Based on a Made-Up Story', calling the writing process “really cathartic.”
When he mentioned he planned to go to Los Angeles but didn’t know where he’d stay, Fisher stepped in.
“It was remarkable,” said Blunt. “The first three months, I didn’t speak to her. I literally didn’t. Her mom, Deborah Reynolds, was on the property."
"I’d see them around, but I would leave in the morning. I’d go off to the studio. I’d come back late, late, late at night, and I just didn’t speak to her.”
That silence broke one night when Blunt overheard Fisher’s staff talking about her bipolar disorder and that she's "gone mad" while she sat in the room.

“What was interesting about all of this, while they were talking about her, she was in the room,” said Blunt.
Carrie Fisher became James Blunt's 'best friend' at a critical stage
The conversation that night turned into a life-changing bond.
“Suddenly, we just had this kind of moment where I went and sat on the end of her bed, and she spoke to me until five in the morning,” Blunt said.
“And the next day, I came in after the studio. I sat on the end of the bed, and we spoke until five in the morning, and we kind of did that for the rest of the time that she was alive."
"She became my best friend, really, at that stage," he said.
