James Carville blasts Dems' 2024 autopsy, calls Harris campaign 'most ineffective $2B ever spent'
WASHINGTON, DC: Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville sharply criticized the Democratic National Committee’s review of the party’s 2024 election loss, arguing that the report failed to address some of the most significant factors behind the defeat.
Speaking on the 'Politics War Room' podcast alongside longtime political journalist Al Hunt, Carville questioned the report’s conclusions and focused particular attention on the spending and effectiveness of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. The DNC’s 192-page report sought to explain the party’s performance and identify lessons for future elections.
James Carville and Al Hunt claim key causes of defeat were overlooked
Hunt dismissed the report as incomplete, arguing that it avoided discussing several major issues that impacted the race. “The supposedly much awaited Democratic autopsy on 2024 came out. To call it a total dud would be to elevate it,” Hunt said. “It didn't mention Biden's age. It didn't mention Gaza. It didn't mention Kamala Harris' campaign problems.”
He suggested that former President Joe Biden remained in the race too long before withdrawing and said Harris struggled to emerge as a strong replacement candidate.
Carville agreed with Hunt’s assessment, saying Democrats should focus more attention on examining the decisions that shaped the final months of the campaign.
DNC Chair Ken Martin released an incomplete 2024 election autopsy:

• Trump’s “they/them” attacks on Harris were seen as highly effective
• Biden team criticized for failing to prepare Harris

The DNC report itself pointed to a series of strategic and messaging problems. It argued that Democrats suffered from “inconsistent messaging and improper planning” and criticized the Biden administration for not doing more to elevate Harris earlier in the term.
James Carville questions Kamala Harris campaign’s $2 billion spending
Carville reserved his strongest criticism for the Harris campaign’s spending during the final stretch of the election.
“If there's one fact about the 2024 election that you need to autopsy above all, and it's this: From Labor Day to election day, the Harris campaign had available and spent $2 billion,” Carville said. “I don't think we got a vote on election day that we weren't going to get on Labor Day anyway. Why wouldn't you want to know?”
He emphasized that he was not alleging wrongdoing but argued that Democrats still have not adequately examined why the campaign’s spending failed to produce better electoral results.
“Clearly, this was the most ineffective $2 billion ever spent. How was it allocated? Why didn't it do any good? Is there a way that we could have done it better? There has to be,” he said.
Carville compared the need for a deeper review to the investigation that follows a major accident. “When an airplane crashes, the last thing anybody says, 'Well, we just need to look ahead. We don't need to look back.' No, actually, you want to find out, was it the landing gear?... and it's idiotic,” he said.
The debate over the report comes as Harris has publicly left open the possibility of seeking the presidency again in 2028.
