James Carville calls for more 'slanted' coverage of Trump amid claims of Constitution being in peril
WASHINGTON, DC: On his podcast on Thursday, June 6, Democratic strategist James Carville called for more "slanted" media coverage of Donald Trump and criticized the executive editor of The New York Times for stating that the newspaper aims to "cover the full range of issues" in the presidential campaign, rather than just those that favor one side.
"Now you have Joe Kahn, the new editor or publisher, whatever he is at The New York Times, saying, ‘We’re just got to cover this down the middle. We’re going to cover what it is.’ I don’t think that’s the role of the news media at a time when the entire Constitution is in peril," Carville made a statement on his 'Politics War Room' podcast, which The Daily Caller initially reported.
"I don’t have anything against slanted coverage. I really don’t, I would have something against it at most other times in American history, but not right now. F**k your objectivity. The real objectivity in this country right now is we’re either going to have a Constitution or we’re not," Carville remarked.
Joe Kahn defended media's neutrality
During a May interview with Semafor, Kahn rejected the notion that the media should "forsake its fundamental role as a provider of unbiased information" due to Trump being perceived as a danger to democracy, Fox News Digital reports.
He asserted that it is not the responsibility of the Times to act as "a tool for the Biden campaign."
"Everything else, from Hunter Biden’s gun application to Judge Merchan’s, I don’t know, $35 contribution, to all of the bulls--t that the professional center feels like they got to put out. I can’t tell you that these are bad people. They’re extremely naive people who have no idea what’s at stake in this election," Carville remarked.
"So I think we need slanted coverage, more slanted coverage and I think we got to recognize the threat that this guy and the MAGA, not just him, the entire MAGA movement, from [Justice] Alito and Trump on down is a serious, it's a clear, serious and present danger to the existence of the Constitution in the United States. And I mean that," he further added.
Critics argue New York Times' coverage of Joe Biden is biased
Carville, who has consistently raised concerns about the Democratic Party's prospects in 2024 and Biden's campaign for re-election, previously advised Biden and his team to put an end to their complaints about the New York Times' coverage of him, stating it was unproductive.
Al Hunt, Carville's co-host on the podcast and former Wall Street Journal reporter, contested Carville's description of the coverage as "slanted," insisting on the necessity of equitable coverage without false equivalences.
In an interview with Semafor, Kahn mentioned that while the Biden campaign has heavily emphasized democracy, it does not rank as a primary concern among voters.
"It’s our job to cover the full range of issues that people have. At the moment, democracy is one of them. But it’s not the top one — immigration happens to be the top [of polls], and the economy and inflation is the second. Should we stop covering those things because they’re favorable to Trump and minimize them?" he said.
He questioned, "We become an instrument of the Biden campaign? We turn ourselves into Xinhua News Agency or Pravda and put out a stream of stuff that’s very, very favorable to them and only write new negative stories about the other side? And that would accomplish — what?"
CNN's Oliver Darcy says NYT should oppose Donald Trump's candidacy
Kahn's remarks sparked a discussion on the media's role in the forthcoming November election, with Democrats and some commentators raising concerns about the potential risk to democracy.
"The NYT has publicly stated over the years that it supports the bedrock principles of American democracy and is opposed to authoritarianism," CNN's Oliver Darcy wrote.
Darcy added, "And, over the last several months, its reporters have indicated that Donald Trump, if elected, would rule with a blatant disregard for democratic norms, akin to an authoritarian. Which means, if one does the math, that The NYT as an institution should by default oppose what Trump's candidacy embodies."
"But it is worth asking: If newsrooms are pro-democracy, and if their reporting indicates one candidate is opposed to democratic values, how can they feign ignorance on the 2024 race?" he continued.
Internet claims Dems are real threat to Constitution
Several users reacted to the discussion on Facebook. One of them wrote, "Yes, the Constitution IS in danger.....from the democrats!"
Another added, "Law and order are needed even for those that we don’t want the law and order to apply."
A comment read, "They would love the constitution to be in peril. People who want biden to leave love the constitution. It's that simple."
"Carville is sooooo dramatic, definitely a Jerry Springer kinda guy," claimed a person.
One user remarked, "Ironic that Carville would be worrying about the Constitution, considering that Biden has been ruling for the past three years by executive orders, with no regard for the other two co-equal branches of government — Congress and the Supreme Court."
