WASHINGTON, DC: A sharp political exchange unfolded on Capitol Hill after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries publicly criticized House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer during a press conference earlier this week. The remarks came as Comer’s committee continued investigating alleged large-scale welfare and social services fraud in Minnesota, a probe launched earlier this month.

Tensions escalated as reporters questioned Democratic leaders about whether Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison were fully cooperating with the Oversight Committee and whether state officials had ignored warning signs tied to the alleged misuse of public funds.

James Comer responds to Hakeem Jeffries criticism

Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, drew attention Thursday when asked whether he was concerned about reports suggesting billions of taxpayer dollars may have been lost through fraudulent programs in Minnesota. Rather than address the substance of the investigation, Jeffries criticized Comer personally, calling him “a joke, an embarrassment, an unserious individual, and a malignant clown.”

Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, responded on Saturday by brushing off the comments and framing them as political deflection. He said Jeffries routinely resorts to personal attacks instead of engaging with the allegations under review. Comer also mocked Jeffries’ public persona, referring to him as “Dollar Store Obama” and questioning his credibility.

“At the end of the day, defending Tim Walz is going to be a huge mistake for the Democrats,” Comer said. “Everyone in Minnesota knows this fraud has been taking place for a long time. The question is who knew about it and when.”

House Oversight Committee examines Minnesota social services fraud

Earlier this month, the House Oversight Committee announced it was examining reports of widespread fraud within Minnesota’s social services programs. In a formal letter sent to Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison, Comer raised concerns about how the alleged misconduct unfolded under their administration.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating reports of widespread fraud in Minnesota’s social services programs,” Comer wrote. “The Committee has serious concerns about how you, as Governor, and the Democrat-controlled administration allowed millions of dollars to be stolen.”

Comer requested documents and internal communications to determine whether state officials were aware of the alleged fraud and whether any steps were taken to stop it or limit investigations.

“The Committee therefore requests documents and communications showing what your administration knew about this fraud and whether you took action to limit or halt the investigation,” the letter added.

Treasury Department scrutiny expands review

The matter has attracted attention beyond Congress. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has reportedly initiated a separate review aimed at tracing the flow of funds and assessing whether the alleged fraud posed broader financial risks.

While the Treasury Department has not publicly detailed the scope of its inquiry, its involvement signaled that federal officials were treating the allegations seriously.

Political fallout and Democratic response

Jeffries’ decision to focus on Comer personally rather than address the investigation has fueled debate among lawmakers and political observers. Republicans have argued Democrats are sidestepping accountability, while Democrats have countered that the probe is politically motivated.

Neither Governor Walz nor Attorney General Ellison has publicly refused to cooperate with the committee. However, their offices have yet to release detailed responses to Comer’s document requests.

Trump weighs in at North Carolina rally

President Donald Trump also addressed the controversy during a rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on Friday night. Trump criticized Democratic leadership in Minnesota and voiced support for conservative figures in the state.
