WASHINGTON, DC: Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said former president Donald Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if he re-enters the White House in November.

The Ohio Senator committed not to impose a federal abortion ban if the Trump-Vance ticket gets elected, as per an interview clip with NBC News, Kristen Welker posted on the 'Meet the Press' X (formerly Twitter) account.

"If such a piece of legislation landed on Donald Trump's desk, would he veto it?" Welker asked.

"I think he would. He said that explicitly that he would," Vance responded.

In April, Trump declared that he would not sign a federal abortion ban leaving the right to individual states, but considered the upending of Roe V Wade an "incredible achievement."

Kamala Harris claims Trump will sign national abortion ban

Before JD Vance's clip was posted on social media, Vice President Kamala Harris took to X, pointing fingers at Trump's appointments of three Supreme Court justices who made possible the overturning of Roe v Wade. The revocation of the ruling dismantled five decades of legal protection for abortion rights, paving the way for states to formulate laws.

"If he is reelected, we know he will sign a national abortion ban," the Democratic presidential nominee wrote. "As president, I will restore reproductive freedom."

The Democrats dismissed Trump's position on abortion, connecting him with the controversial Project 2025. The 900-page right-wing agenda by the Heritage Foundation formulated as a presidential transition plan for the next Republican in the White House includes a demand to revoke the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 's approval for mifepristone, an abortion pill.

Trump denied any association with the Project 2025, claiming it "goes way too far" with abortion.

In the 'Meet the Press' clip, Vance said it was "important to step back and say, what has Donald Trump actually said on the abortion question, and how is it different from what Kamala Harris and the Democrats have said?"

He claimed that the former president wanted to end the cultural war over abortion, adding that if California wanted to follow a different abortion policy from Ohio and vice versa, the states had to respect it.

Internet slams JD Vance and Trump over remarks on abortion ban

Refusing to believe Vance's claim that Trump would veto a national abortion ban if elected netizens accused the GOP ticket of lying, noting the ex-president often boasted about his role in overturning Roe v Wade.

"So if he didn’t have to worry about anything else, and there were no checks and balances, and there were no political repercussions or implications, and he was met with the opportunity to federally ban all abortions… a simple yea or nay. would he ban them? the sellout is crazy," a user wrote.

"It's the states decision you damn retards," another remarked.

"They’re both depraved liars," added a third user.

"Don't believe a word that JD or Trump says. They tell lies every time they open their mouth," read a fourth response.

"How can you believe a thing either one of those clowns say. Trump is the most dishonest man in America," someone else said.

"Everyone with a functioning brain cell knows this is a lie! Trump has bragged endlessly about ending Roe! No one and I repeat No one believes this pivot to the center. His campaign is looking at the data and they realize just how unpopular republican policies are with women!" an individual chimed in.

"If their lips are moving , well you know they’re lying. The little boys who called wolf way too many times. Trump and Vance are not and will never be credible again," another user chimed in.

"Yeah, Vance also said he was a never Trumper and now he's his running mate, so you can't trust a word he says," read one remark.
