SPRINGFIELD, OHIO: JD Vance fired back at mounting criticism over his promotion of false claims that Haitian immigrants had abducted and eaten pets in Springfield, Ohio.

In a post on X on Tuesday, September 10, the Ohio senator stated that his office had received numerous inquiries from Springfield residents alleging that Haitian migrants were responsible for the abduction of neighbors' pets and local wildlife.

False allegations against Haitian immigrants

After prominent conservative figures, including Charlie Kirk and Elon Musk, shared posts amplifying the false statements, the allegations gained traction over the weekend.

The controversy originated in late August from a Springfield resident’s comments at a City Commission meeting, where they accused Haitian immigrants of killing ducks in a local park for food, among other unsubstantiated claims.

Despite the online spread of these claims, the Springfield Police Department confirmed that it had not received any reports related to the theft or consumption of pets.

JD Vance’s controversial post

On Monday, September 9, JD Vance shared a video of himself reading a letter authored by Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck.

The letter he read during a July meeting of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee highlighted the city’s challenges in managing housing for the increasing Haitian immigrant population.

The Republican vice presidential candidate's post, however, added a reference to the pet-eating claim, further stoking the controversy.

Responding to the claim, Heck clarified that such allegations are unfounded and detract from the community's real challenges.

“In response to recent rumors alleging criminal activity by the immigrant population in our city, we wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community,” said Heck.

“Yes, this clearly takes away from the letter’s point that we are struggling with housing, resources for our schools, and an overwhelmed healthcare system,” he added in his statement to The Hill.

JD Vance's response to broader criticism over false Haitian pet-eating claims

In his Tuesday, September 10, post, JD Vance addressed the controversial claims, stating, “It’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false."

Addressing issues that he suggested were related to the rising immigrant population in Springfield, Vance asked, “Do you know what’s confirmed?"

"That a child was murdered by a Haitian migrant who had no right to be here. That local health services have been overwhelmed,” he stated.

His mention of the child’s death refers to a school bus accident in 2023 involving a Haitian immigrant who crashed into the bus, resulting in the tragic incident.

Vance also referenced other community issues such as a rise in communicable diseases like tuberculosis and HIV, the impact of rising rents on local families, and the challenges faced by local schools in accommodating non-English speaking newcomers.

The Ohio senator linked these concerns to the increased presence of Haitian migrants in the area.

In the post, Vance included a link to a previous interview with Vice President Kamala Harris discussing the Biden administration’s decision to grant temporary protected status to over 100,000 Haitian migrants.
