COLUMBUS, OHIO: The 2024 Republican vice-presidential candidate, Sen JD Vance (R-Ohio), currently holds the record for being the least popular vice-presidential candidate in modern history, scoring even lower than Sarah Palin, according to polling averages compiled by FiveThirtyEight.

This rating is lower than that of Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, whose popularity decreased to -2 percent.

How is JD Vance’s favorability rating compared to Sarah Palin?

Sarah Palin experienced a significant decline in popularity while running alongside John McCain, reaching a peak favorability rating of +21 in August 2008 before dropping by 23 percent.

Vance has experienced a less drastic popularity decline, starting with an average approval rating of just -3.

Nevertheless, the Keystone State senator’s numbers have continued to decline, with several controversial comments leading to the lowest average favorability rating for any vice-presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz is in a much stronger position.

On average, the Minnesota Governor has maintained a net positive approval rating since joining Vice President Kamala Harris on the ticket on August 6, and his net favorability now stands at +4.7 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight data.

A recent poll from Emerson College (up to 14 August) suggests that Kamala Harris may have the highest popularity of all current candidates for the election, while both Trump and Vance have considerably high disapproval rates at -10 percent.

In this survey, Walz is tied at neutral favorability, although on average, his favorability has been positive.

The only VP nominee more unpopular than Palin but still rated higher than Vance was Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016.

Kaine’s net favorability was just -4 percent on election day in 2016, significantly lower than Republican VP Mike Pence, who had a +5 favorability rating.
