WASHINGTON, DC: Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance took a sexist swipe at Vice President Kamala Harris by comparing her to a teenage beauty pageant contender.

The Ohio senator made the misogynist comparison in response to Harris' first major interview since entering the 2024 presidential race last month. The Democratic presidential nominee and her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, sat for their first joint sit-down with CNN's Dana Bash on Thursday, August 29.

Vance mocked the interview on X (formerly Twitter), sharing an infamous video clip of a Miss Teen USA contestant giving a clueless answer to a question in 2007.

"BREAKING: I have gotten ahold of the full Kamala Harris CNN interview," he captioned the post that, garnered more than 8.5 million views so far.

The nearly a minute-long video clip featured then-18-year-old Caitlin Upton representing South Carolina, struggling to answer a question on why some Americans could not locate the United States on a world map.

Upton, who was an honor student at the time, faced intense mockery for her incoherent answer at the 2007 Miss Teen USA, as per HuffPost. Later, in an interview, the contestant admitted that she froze up while answering the question. "Personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on a map," she said.

Vance's sexist dig comparing Vice President Harris to an 18-year-old's answer at a beauty pageant could indicate a false stereotype of labeling women ignorant.

During her CNN interview, Harris stated her "values have not changed," though she admitted a shift in her progressive stance on some issues like the Green New Deal that she adopted during her Democratic primary race in 2019 and 2020.

"I have always believed, and I have worked on it, that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter, to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time," she said to Bash.

Harris, the second woman to get a major party nomination to run for White House, has often faced attacks from her opponent, former president Donald Trump. He has repeatedly questioned her intelligence, her racial identity and even cast doubts over how she rose up the political ladder.

Mockery of the CNN interview is not the first sexist comment Vance made of Harris.

During his Senate race in 2021, he called the vice president and other prominent female Democrats "childless cat ladies". Furthermore, recently, he said that Harris "can go to hell," for criticizing Trump over the altercation at Arlington National Cemetery.

Despite the frequent attacks by the Republican ticket, the latest polls suggested that Harris surged ahead of Trump. According to the new Reuters/Ipsos poll, the vice president leads the real estate mogul by 45% to 41% voter support.

Internet slams JD Vance for likening Harris' CNN interview to Miss Teen USA contestant

Outraged at JD Vance's comparison of Kamala Harris' interview to the incoherent answer by the beauty pageant contestant, netizens claimed he hated women. Many pointed out that it could adversely impact Republicans in the November election.

"Seems like this dude just straight up hates women…" a user said.

"There is nothing appealing about @JDVance He’s an elite snob with backward ideas. He loves pushing his right wing Christian values on everyone. It’s had to understand how his intelligent wife can tolerate the misogynistic views he now espouses," another remarked.

"Popping in real quick to say I have never seen anyone so precipitously engineer their own descent into irrelevance and obscurity. This guy’s inability to refrain from petty, childish schoolyard bully taunts like this exhibits only immaturity, insecurity, and political ineptitude," added a third user.

"This is such a curious and backfiring strategy. Outside of offending women again (which almost seems to be his strategy at this point) it sets the bar so low for Harris that she can easily surpass it in an interview. It does not make strategic sense except as school yard taunting," read a fourth response.

"This woman considered suicide over this moment. Of course JD “Cringe” Vance finds it funny. There’s never been a more pathetic running mate in US history. Let Vance keep talking and continue digging a hole the Trump Campaign can never crawl out of," someone else wrote.

"This unfortunate girl contemplated suicide due to the online harassment related to her this appearance. You’re really an awful person," an individual chimed in.

"You deep seated hatred for woman is obvious. That as an adult you still haven’t gotten over your Mommy issues- that’s on you - keep the rest of us out of it," another user wrote.

"Attacks on women is wild. This is going to go so bad for you buddy. Thanks for helping democrats win @JDVance has been the greatest Trojan horse for the Democratic party. An insider who dismantled Trump from within," read one remark.
