Jennifer Lopez set to go back to maiden name and drop ‘Affleck’ surname that she once found 'romantic'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jennifer Lopez, 55, filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on August 20, marking the second anniversary of their wedding.
In a recent petition, Lopez requested to revert to her maiden name, Jennifer Lynn Lopez, as part of the separation process. The move signifies a deeper estrangement between the couple, who did not have a prenuptial agreement before their marriage in July 2022, as reported by Daily Mail. This represents Jennifer's fourth marriage, which ended in divorce, and Ben's second.
Jennifer Lopez seeks name change after divorcing Ben Affleck
According to a divorce filing reported by USA TODAY on Thursday, August 22, Lopez who has been legally known as Jennifer Lynn Affleck since marrying the Oscar Winning actor in 2022 — has requested to change her name back to Jennifer Lynn Lopez.
The singer and actress earlier discussed the controversy surrounding her choice to use the name Jennifer Affleck following her marriage to Ben Affleck.
"People will still call me Jennifer Lopez. However, my legal name will be Mrs Affleck because we're united as husband and wife. I’m proud of that, and I don’t see it as an issue," she explained.
When asked by her interviewer if she wished Ben would take on the name Mr Lopez, she laughed and replied, "No! It's not traditional. It doesn't have any romance to it."
Lopez and Affleck’s marriage, which lasted just over two years, is now set to involve a division of their assets from the past two years as community property. Lopez, with an estimated net worth of $400 million, has released four films since their marriage and launched a successful cocktail line, Delola.
She had also planned a world tour in support of her album 'This Is Me... Now', but it was postponed to 2025 to focus on family.
Oscar-winner Affleck, with a reported net worth of $150 million, has recently appeared in 'Air' (2023) and 'Hypnotic' (2023), and has finished filming a sequel to 'The Accountant' (2016). Complicating matters further, Lopez and Affleck collaborated on the forthcoming film 'Unstoppable.' While Affleck is producing the film with Matt Damon, Lopez is featured as one of the stars.
Lopez is not requesting spousal support and has asked the court to deny it for Affleck as well.
Lopez and Affleck’s differing lifestyles contributed to their separation. While Lopez often traveled with her children and enjoyed public events, Affleck preferred a more private, home-centric lifestyle. Reports suggest that this divergence in interests, coupled with Lopez’s push for a more family-oriented focus, created additional strain.
The source added, "They are very different people, she's super public and wants to go out, and he's more of an introvert and is happy to hang out at home."
Lopez frequently traveled with her children due to her demanding schedule and probably intended to bring all five along on her summer tour, which has now been pushed to 2025. Affleck, on the other hand, prefers staying in more often, as he tends to be less outgoing compared to Lopez.
Lopez's divorce filing came exactly two years after their elaborate second wedding, and sources indicate that the timing of the filing was deliberate. An insider revealed that Lopez felt it was necessary to take control of the situation, as she was disappointed and sad but believed it was time to move on.
A source shared with PEOPLE, "She's very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn't given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage. He hasn't shown any commitment or interest in making their marriage work. It's gotten to the point that she just needs to look out for herself."
A source informed the publication that Lopez was very aware of the timing of the filing. They explained, "She was done waiting and the date she did it speaks a ton. The divorce filing gives her control of the process. It's good that she did it."
The insider added that despite her efforts to make the relationship work, Jennifer is heartbroken. The source also added, "The kids are a top priority, as they always have been."
Jennifer Lopez’s divorce filing sparks widespread debate
Jennifer Lopez's recent decision to file for divorce from Ben Affleck has ignited a flurry of online discussions on Daily Mail. The singer wants to return to her maiden name and not seek spousal support for either party, leading to various opinions on social media.
One user commented, “Jennifer is not seeking spousal support and has asked the judge to deny it for Ben as well. That’s the way to do it. Just divide up the property that was accumulated during the marriage and say goodbye and move on.”
Another user said, “She’s very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn’t given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage. He hasn’t shown any commitment and interest in making their marriage work.”
“A divorce is bad on its own. Can you imagine a divorce fresh off the heels of a cringey documentary of the allegedly greatest love story of all, and a movie about it, to boot? They will be reminded of this doomed relationship forever!” one user wrote.
Another user commented, “He’ll be fine while she’s dealing with a personal and career crisis. I get that it’s all extremely humiliating for her and I hope she can learn a few more life lessons.”
Another one added, "They don’t need a prenup. They will work out things amicably between themselves. Neither will probably take anything from each other."
