WASHINGTON, DC: Since leaving the White House, former President Joe Biden recently delivered a speech at the 2025 International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference in Washington, DC.
During that address, he attempted to invoke the spirit of national unity but stumbled over a basic line.
Instead of “the United States of America,” what came out was more like “Amerigotit,” which quickly became a viral moment.
Joe Biden's gaffe during the speech
At the conference, Biden was honored with the Chris Abele Impact Award and went on to deliver his speech.
As part of a passionate speech about the nation’s resilience and unity, he tried to rally the audience.
“As long as we keep the faith, some hope and get back up and remember who in the hell we are", He said.
Biden then fumbled "we are the United States of Amerigotit,” before adding, “That’s who we are. We are the US.”
It was difficult to tell exactly what the former president said, which led to multiple interpretations across social media.
Many online commentators were amused or bewildered. The moment overshadowed the substance of his speech, transforming an earnest appeal into an odd viral clip.
One user remarked, reacting to Biden’s mispronunciation, "We’re the United States of whaaat? Joe Biden butchers 'America.'"

Wider debate on Joe Biden’s public speaking and health
Biden’s embarrassing blunder comes amid growing scrutiny over his health and age as central topics in political discussions during his final year in office.
He faced intense criticism over his cognitive abilities following a poor debate performance against President Trump in June 2024, which eventually led him to withdraw from the election the following month.
Earlier that year, his longtime physician, Dr Kevin O’Connor, had declared him “fit to serve” after Biden, then the presumptive Democratic nominee, underwent a routine medical examination in February.
In May 2025, Biden publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
Critics have expressed concerns about his mental sharpness and clarity in recent months, particularly following the release of the investigative book 'Original Sin by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson' in May, which reportedly highlighted struggles during his final year in office and his decision to seek a second term.
At the same time, Biden has frequently spoken about his lifelong battle with a stutter.
