John Goodman opens up about body image struggles after losing 200 pounds
Speaking on the November 2 episode of the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Goodman recalled turning down a revealing scene in the HBO comedy 'The Righteous Gemstones', which ran for four seasons between 2019 and 2025.
The actor explained that he was uncomfortable with how his body might appear on camera following his significant weight loss. "I thought I was going to have to be naked in it and I said, 'I don't know. My body's too messed up losing all this weight,'" Goodman shared.
He added that he and the production crew eventually found a way to work around the situation and "got it done." Despite his transformation, the actor admitted that he is still getting accustomed to his appearance.

"I'm still trying to get used to my face," he said. "It's weird. I think of myself as one way and then I look at myself, 'Oh, wow!'" Goodman added that the experience has been strange but enjoyable, explaining that there are several aspects of his new appearance and lifestyle that he is still learning to accept.
Looking back at his career, Goodman also wondered whether his previous lifestyle had contributed to what he described as "self-sabotage". "I was working enough as I was," he said. "I wasn't crazy about it, but I wonder if I probably sabotaged myself."
The 'Roseanne' actor has previously spoken about his struggles with weight, revealing that he repeatedly lost and regained significant amounts of weight. In an interview with The New Yorker published on October 18, he recalled losing 60 pounds during one summer before gaining it back, followed by similar cycles involving 70 and 80 pounds.

John Goodman reflects on substance abuse struggles and his journey towards better health
Goodman revealed that his relationship with food became particularly complicated after he overcame substance abuse in 2007, when he was 55. Despite making changes to his lifestyle, he developed unhealthy eating habits, describing the experience as "eating alcoholically".
The actor previously disclosed that he reached almost 400 pounds at his heaviest in 2011. Reflecting on his past struggles, Goodman explained that his substance abuse had sustained his immaturity and contributed to the jovial onscreen persona audiences associated with him.
However, he was prepared to leave that image behind when his health became a serious concern. "If I did [think about losing the 'happy guy' onscreen persona], it was a secondary thought, because I was saving my life at that point," he said, adding that he was willing to do "whatever it took" to overcome his struggles.

Goodman also discussed how his eating habits were connected to his tendency to seek instant gratification. He explained that he often overlooked the consequences of his actions, describing a cycle of increasingly severe physical effects and repeatedly turning to substances to manage them.
"I was in a position, when I quit, where I had to be hospitalized one way or the other. I just was tired of it, and I wanted to stop," he said. He added that his substance abuse had delayed his personal growth and made him realise how selfish his behaviour had become.
