Joy Reid jokes about Trump taking Air Force One amid criticism over misuse of Presidential Records Act
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump's contentious relationship with the law continues to make headlines, this time drawing sharp criticism from Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg.
In a recent interview with Joy Reid, Aronberg lambasted Trump's interpretation of the Presidential Records Act, emphasizing that the former president's belief that he can "take whatever he wants" under this legislation is fundamentally flawed.
Legal expert criticizes Trump's interpretation of Presidential Records Act
Aronberg pointed out that Trump's interpretation essentially turned the purpose of the Presidential Records Act on its head.
Established in the wake of the Watergate scandal, this act was designed to ensure that government records belong to the people and are archived appropriately, rather than being subject to the whims of any president.
Aronberg pointed out, "What's troubling is that Trump interprets the Presidential Records Act as allowing him to take whatever he wants."
"He completely misconstrues the purpose of the act. It was enacted after Watergate to guarantee that government records belong to the public and are archived appropriately, not retained by the president," Aronberg added.
He employed a vivid analogy to highlight the absurdity of Trump's stance, stating, "He can no more take government records and classified documents than he could take Air Force One or rent out the Lincoln Bedroom on Airbnb."
"He has no authority to do any of these actions, and the fact that Trump personally attends these hearings indicates how significant he considers this matter," Aronberg further said.
Aronberg suggested that Trump's presence may be an attempt to sway judgment in his favor, perhaps by reminding the presiding judge of his authority as the individual who appointed her.
In response to Aronberg's remarks, Joy Reid offered a pointed jest, cautioning, "Please don't threaten him with a good time" as "he might just actually try to take Air Force One if you say that and turn it into one of his failed private Airlines."
