WASHINGTON, DC: Joy Reid is losing her show on MSNBC as part of a sweeping change undertaken by the network, the Daily Beast reported on Sunday, February 23.

The final episode of her show, 'The ReidOut' is slated to be aired at the regular slot of 7 pm weeknights later this week, confirmed an insider familiar with the shakeup.

The change is reportedly being overseen by MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler, who is planning to restructure programming across the network's daytime, primetime, and weekend schedule.

Why is 'The ReidOut' being axed by MSNBC?

While Joy Reid is one of the most prominent faces on MSNBC, according to rival network Fox News, her show 'The ReidOut' has struggled to attract viewers in recent days. During February 2025, the show averaged 973,000 total viewers. It was a 28% decline from last year when the figure stood at 1.3 million.

As a fiercely progressive Black woman, Reid has been a strong critic of Donald Trump since his first term in the Oval Office. She was given her own primetime show in 2020 after she hosted the weekend morning chat show 'AM Joy' for four years.

The timing of Reid's dismissal was further shocking as her show won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News/Information Series on Saturday, February 22, the day before the announcement.

However, Reid's tenure as MSNBC anchor was not without controversies. In 2018, blog posts under her name carrying alleged homophobic remarks came to light. Reid insisted at the time that it was not written by her and she had been hacked, but the claim has reportedly not been substantiated.

Following Trump's reelection to the White House in November 2024, Reid controversially claimed Black women had lost interest in "saving America" after witnessing the betrayal of White women voters who showed stronger support for Trump than expected.

Who will replace Joy Reid on MSNBC?

Joy Reid's primetime slot is slated to be assigned to a new show that will be co-anchored by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez. All three of them are reportedly strong progressive voices despite their varying backgrounds.

Sanders-Townsend was the national press secretary for the 2016 Democratic primary campaign of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, while Steele is a former chairman of the Republican party who is vocally anti-Trump. Menendez is a longtime journalist, liberal commentator, and organizer who currently hosts 'The Weekend' on MSNBC.

The new program will be airing at 7 pm on weekdays and will extend for two hours only on Mondays. A change in the slots of other MSNBC hosts such as Rachel Maddow and Jen Psaki may soon follow, an insider shared with the Daily Beast.
