Kaia Gerber channels mom Cindy Crawford’s iconic ‘90s Oscar look at TIFF and Internet does a double take

TORONTO, CANADA: Kaia Gerber is stepping into her mother, Cindy Crawford's legendary fashion footsteps—literally. 

The 23-year-old model and actress made waves at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) premiere of her latest film 'Shell' on September 12, by wearing a dress that paid tribute to one of her mother Cindy Crawford's most iconic red-carpet moments.

According to US Weekly, Crawford and Rande Gerber, who tied the knot in 1998, share a son Presley Gerber, and a daughter Kaia Gerber.

According to Vogue, Kaia Gerber walked the red carpet in a white Herve Leger body-con dress, a recreation of the same French fashion house gown her mother famously wore to the 1993 Oscars.

The sleek, figure-hugging design echoed Crawford’s signature style from the event where she accompanied then-husband Richard Gere.

Gerber's gown was crafted with Herve Leger’s signature bandage material and styled similarly to her mother’s, complete with white pointed-toe heels and elegant accessories.

Gerber’s stylist, Molly Dickinson, revealed that the tribute was deliberate. “Kaia had sent me a mood board for TIFF and this was one of her references,” she told Vogue.

“I thought it would be amazing to pay tribute to Cindy’s iconic moment.” The look was further elevated with vintage diamond jewelry and a vintage Omega watch—straight from Crawford’s own collection—adding a personal touch to the ensemble.

Dickinson, known for styling stars like Sydney Sweeney, Sadie Sink, and Bella Hadid, shared the nostalgic inspiration on her Instagram Stories.

In a post featuring Crawford’s original 1993 look, she teased, “Just wait for it guys...” before revealing a side-by-side of Gerber’s recreation.

Gerber’s TIFF appearance is just the latest in a series of archival fashion moments she’s embraced.

Just two days earlier, at the TIFF premiere of Saturday Night, she dazzled in a vintage 2003 Donna Karan gown, which featured a daring plunging neckline and open back, as reported by W magazine.

2024 has been a standout year for the young star’s red-carpet moments. At the Summer Olympics in Paris, Gerber and her supermodel mother both wowed in coordinating little black dresses during the opening night of Omega House Paris 2024.

And, at May’s Met Gala, she turned heads in a strapless Prada gown covered in oversized sequins, with voluminous hair reminiscent of Crawford's iconic '90s style.
