LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Former Vice President Kamala Harris shared dating advice for young women, urging them to prioritize kindness when choosing a partner. Harris, who married Doug Emhoff in 2014 in her 40s, spoke about the different phases young women may experience in relationships.
She also reflected on how people want different things at various phases of life, drawing from her own experiences with Emhoff.
What dating advice did Kamala Harris give to young women?
During an appearance on the 'Rich Little Brokegirls' podcast on Tuesday, December 23, Kamala Harris encouraged listeners to look for kindness in a partner.
“Choose to be with someone who allows you to laugh at yourself and them,” she said. “Choose to be with someone who you know you like, going to the grocery store together, taking a walk together.”
Harris, who married Doug Emhoff in 2014 in her 40s, said, "There are different phases in your life and you may not know what phase you’re in."
She explained while laughing, "Maybe you’re going to choose that you want to have that kind of Friday night relationship — or you want that Sunday morning relationship."
She continued, "Sometimes you can get both — and sometimes they just are oil and water. And that’s OK! Be in those phases where you are having fun!"
She added that people want different things at different stages of life and said she may not have been ready to marry Emhoff earlier. “Doug and I got married in our 40s, and I love my husband so very much. He is my best friend,” Harris said. “And we’ve talked about it, if we had met in our 20s, I don’t know that we would have really been in the same place.”
Kamala Harris said she was criticized for lacking humility
The former vice president Kamala Harris recalled a moment when a reporter criticized her for lacking humility during the podcast episode.
“I don’t aspire to be humble. Humility is important, yes,” Harris said. She argued that the criticism reflects outdated expectations placed on women.
“It’s a very dated perspective on who women should be. To say, women should be humble,” she said. “Women should not have a sense of humor. Women should not raise their voice.”
Harris added, "I have never felt burdened by those very dated, and I think out-of-touch standards."
During her '107' days as the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris largely avoided discussing identity politics or complaining about sexism. Despite making history as the first female vice president and the second woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket, she chose not to focus on her gender.
Notably, this approach differed from Hillary Clinton’s, who often highlighted breaking the “glass ceiling” and spoke openly about the different standards women face.
