WASHINGTON, DC: As the 2024 presidential race gains momentum, a new Kamala Harris meme has emerged on social media.

The focus of the new viral trend is none other than Vice President Kamala Harris, who is featured in a wave of edits involving a photo of her holding a record. The meme resembles Chandler Bing’s iconic moment with an LP in the TV show 'Friends'. These memes come after Harris campaign was already riding high on the success from Coconut and Brat memes.

Origin of Kamala Harris vinyl meme

The original photograph of Vice President Harris with a record was taken during her recent visit to DC's Home Run Records as part of Small Business Week. During this visit, Harris participated in an impromptu 'What’s in My Bag?' segment, akin to those seen at Amoeba Records, where she shared her favorite albums with the press, Vulture reported.

The light-hearted moment quickly captured the public's imagination and led to the creation of a meme generator that places various album covers into Harris’s hands. The generator has allowed users to place any album cover into the VP's hands. Following are some of the most creative Kamala-vinyl edits on the internet.

In the wake of these memes, Vice President Harris’s campaign has reported quite the momentum. On July 28, Harris's campaign announced a remarkable fundraising achievement: they had raised $200 million and recruited 170,000 new volunteers within a week of her becoming the Democratic Party's presidential candidate.

The surge in support underscores a revitalized energy within the Democratic ranks following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Harris for the November 5 election against former President Donald Trump.

Rob Flaherty, Harris's deputy campaign manager, shared these numbers on X, stating, "In the week since we got started, @KamalaHarris has raised $200 million dollars. 66 per cent of that is from new donors. We've signed up 170,000 new volunteers."

Polling data and Kamala Harris’s path to nomination

Recent polls reflect a competitive race between Harris and Trump.

For instance, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on July 23 indicated a two-point lead for Harris, while a Wall Street Journal poll placed Trump ahead by two percentage points. Another poll by the New York Times/Siena College showed Harris closing the gap on Trump, signaling a tightly contested race as the election approaches.

Trump’s campaign, on the other hand, reported $331 million in fundraising for the second quarter, surpassing the $264 million raised by Biden’s campaign and its Democratic allies. At the end of June, Trump's campaign had $284.9 million in cash on hand, compared to the $240 million held by the Democratic campaign.

Despite the intense competition, Harris has secured the support of a majority of delegates for the Democratic National Convention, which is expected to confirm her as the party’s nominee on August 1.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison confirmed this, stating on MSNBC, "So our vice president is the presumptive nominee. We will have the official vote on August 1."

Biden’s exit from the race, prompted by concerns over his age and health, appears to have reenergized the Democratic base. Harris’s candidacy may have injected new life into the party’s efforts, countering earlier doubts about Biden’s ability to defeat Trump or continue governing if reelected.

Republican attacks and campaign strategy

The shift in the Democratic race has triggered increased Republican criticism of Harris. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a former Republican presidential contender who now supports Trump, has disparaged Harris as "incredibly vapid" and predicted that Democrats would attempt to distance her from the Biden administration’s policies.

"They have to whitewash Harris's background to be able to make her palpable to the American people," he said.

Conversely, some Trump allies, including members of the 'Black Americans for Trump' coalition, caution that negative remarks about Harris might alienate crucial Black voters. This demographic is expected to play a significant role in the November election.

Harris’s campaign has not yet responded to DeSantis's comments. However, Mitch Landrieu, a campaign co-chair, remarked on MSNBC that Harris “had one of the best weeks that we’ve seen in politics in the last 50 years.” He added, “This is going to be a very close race."

Trump’s campaign has also experienced a surge in fundraising, partly fueled by his recent conviction on felony charges related to a hush-money payment and an assassination attempt earlier this month, Reuters reported.
