Trump plans rally in Butler after failed assassination attempt, Internet claims it’s 'all about his ego'
BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA: Donald Trump has announced plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he narrowly survived an assassination attempt nearly two weeks ago.
The former president intends to hold a rally in honor of Corey Comperatore, a supporter who lost his life, and others injured during the shooting.
The announcement on Trump's Truth Social platform promised a "big and beautiful" event to honor Comperatore and the "brave patriots" injured in the attack, as reported by Fox News.
Donald Trump plans rally in Pennsylvania town of Butler following failed assassination attempt
"I WILL BE GOING BACK TO BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA, FOR A BIG AND BEAUTIFUL RALLY, HONORING THE SOUL OF OUR BELOVED FIREFIGHTING HERO, COREY, AND THOSE BRAVE PATRIOTS INJURED TWO WEEKS AGO. WHAT A DAY IT WILL BE — FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT! STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS," Trump penned.
On July 13, Trump was minutes into his speech in Butler, a key battleground state for the 2024 election, when a gunman named Thomas Crooks fired eight shots at the stage. Trump sustained an injury to his right ear and later appeared at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee with a large white bandage covering it.
During the convention, Trump paid tribute to Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter who died protecting his family from the gunfire.
Trump's reaction to the shooting, where he raised his fist and mouthed "Fight" to the crowd while Secret Service agents escorted him off the stage, has since become a symbol of his campaign.
FBI Director Christopher Wray addressed the assassination attempt in a hearing on Capitol Hill, stating there was "some question" about whether Trump was hit by a bullet or shrapnel.
Trump disputed this on Truth Social, insisting, "No, it was, unfortunately, a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard. There was no glass, there was no shrapnel." He criticized the FBI, saying, "No wonder the once storied FBI has lost the confidence of America!"
The FBI continues to investigate the attack, treating it as an attempted assassination. The incident has also prompted significant scrutiny of the US Secret Service.
Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned this week amid growing criticism over the security lapses that allowed the gunman to get dangerously close to Trump. In her resignation letter, Cheatle admitted that the agency had "fallen short" of its mission to protect national leaders on the day of the shooting.
