Kansas City Chiefs shares update on BJ Thompson's recovery after sudden cardiac arrest left him hospitalized
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: There’s some good news coming on NFL player BJ Thompson's health.
The Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman, who suffered a medical emergency at the team’s facility on Thursday, June 6, is "awake," per the Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance for the team.
"He's alert, he's awake. He's coming through quite well," said Rick Burkholder, during a live press conference on June 7, per People.
"We don't have a diagnosis and in medicine sometimes you don't have that. [He’s] headed in the absolute right direction," he continued.
Update on BJ Thompson's current health
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network via Thompson’s agent tweeted, "A positive update: #Chiefs DE BJ Thompson is awake and responsive, according to his agent, Chris Turnage."
"One day after Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a special teams meeting, the second-year pro’s prognosis is good," he added.
In his previous statement, Pelissero shared that the NFL team's medical staff "immediately" responded to the emergency when Thompson began seizing during a "special teams meeting" on Thursday.
The media availability originally scheduled for Thursday, featuring head coach Andy Reid and select players, has been postponed to Friday, June 7, per NFL.com.
Thompson was picked in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and has played in one game for the NFL's back-to-back champions.
