Kate Winslet recalls moment she realized her husband Edward Abel Smith was ‘the one’ for her
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Hollywood icon Kate Winslet is quite secretive when it comes to her marriage, yet she has recently offered an unusual glimpse into her relationship with Edward "Ned" Abel Smith.
The 47-year-old 'Titanic' star, who has been married for 12 years, revealed that she realized Edward was "the one" when he saved her and her children during an awful event on his uncle, Richard Branson's Necker Island.
Kate Winslet recounts when she knew Edward Abel Smith was 'the one' for her
Kate Winslet married Edward Abel Smith (also known as Ned Rocknroll), Richard Branson's nephew, in 2012—12 years ago.
The two had just recently become friends in 2011 when a storm hit Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands, where Kate and her children, including Mia—whom she shares with her first husband Jim Threapleton—were vacationing.
Kate revealed that Edward helped them escape their burning house after it was struck by lightning. Although everyone survived, the British actress eventually realized Edward was "the one" and thus, their love story began.
"It was very clear to me that this was the person I was supposed to follow through life. And I still feel exactly that way now," Kate said to The Telegraph.
In the interview with the outlet, Kate discussed her new movie, 'Lee,' where she plays the amazing model who later became a WWII photographer, Lee Miller.
Kate added: "[Ned] looks after everybody. He's wonderful. We literally do life together, we really do. He's always jumped from project to project, and when I met him he was setting up a music festival."
Moreover, Kate admitted that she was unaware that Edward used the surname Rocknroll when they first met; he has subsequently changed it back to Abel Smith.
"When someone told me, I thought, that's brilliant, because the funny thing is, he's not remotely rock and roll. He's Mr Vegan Yoga. He's just the life and soul," she admitted.
She added: "Ned and I, we are real-life optimists. When you live with someone who wakes up, opens the curtains, and says, 'Hello, the world!' you just think, yes, I am going to sign up for life."
Kate Winslet opens up about meeting Edward Abel Smith as 'complete stranger'
Kate Winslet told People about her initial meeting with husband Edward Abel Smith in 2017: "He was a complete stranger, we met, and then the next day the house burnt down."
"I believe strangers can meet and their lives can change so much that they simply can't go back to being the person they once were," she added.
She further said, "[He and I] very much went through that together. Even now, I often times find myself looking for an item of clothing or a book or something and I go, 'Where have I put that?' And Ned will look at me and go, 'Did it get burnt in the fire?'"
The couple got married in a covert ceremony in New York in 2012. They welcomed their son, Bear Blaze, in 2013.
Ever since they tied the knot, the English actress hasn't stopped praising her husband for adding inspiration and balance to her life.
In a 2015 interview, per Hello! Magazine, Kate said, "My creative life in the last few years has been really, really, colorful for me."
"And I've really really enjoyed being able to embrace that. I have a wonderful man in my life who is so incredibly supportive that makes it possible for me to have those experiences," she said.
Kate Winslet promotes her upcoming movie 'Lee'
Kate Winslet plays the incredible model-turned-World War II photographer Lee Miller in the much-awaited biopic 'Lee', which will highlight the extraordinary talent and flexibility of the English actress.
According to Daily Mail, the film explores the remarkable life of pioneer Lee Miller, who went from being a gorgeous model to an adventurous WWII photographer.
Kate is expected to play Lee Miller compellingly and poignantly, encapsulating the spirit of a lady who broke with tradition and left her stamp on history.
Themes of courage, resiliency, and transformation—all of which are highly relevant in today's world—resonate throughout Lee's story.
In an interview with Vogue (the publication that the real Lee Miller worked as a photographer for during the war), Kate and producer Kate Solomon revealed details about the movie.
It was then revealed that Kate, who recently appeared on the Vogue World red carpet, not only covered crew costs but also battled through injuries.
On her first day on set, Kate stumbled and hurt her back while practicing a scene in which Lee is rushing through the streets of Saint-Malo, France, in 1944 while it is being bombarded.
At one point, Kate paid the film's workers two weeks' worth of salary when the production required extra money to make sure it got made.
Kate "personally covered two weeks of wages to keep things going" during pre-production, according to insiders who said the movie's financing was "precarious".
