ST LOUIS, MISSOURI: Kaylee Gain, a teenager from Missouri, continues to grapple with the aftermath of a vicious school attack that left her without a portion of her skull.
Despite her condition “improving considerably”, Gain's recovery journey is far from over, according to statements by her family released on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, the New York Post reported.
Challenges in Kaylee Gain's recovery journey
Following months of hospitalization and rehabilitation, the 16-year-old has returned home, but her path to full recovery remains uncertain.
Attorney Bryan Kaemmerer, representing Gain's family, emphasized the challenges ahead, noting that she still requires additional surgeries to reattach the missing part of her skull.
“While hospitalized, Kaylee underwent a craniectomy which is a neurosurgical procedure that involved removing a portion of Kaylee’s skull in order to relieve the pressure on her brain,” Kaemmerer wrote.
“The portion of Kaylee’s skull that was removed still has not been put back in place,” he added. Despite her physical progress, Gain continues to grapple with short-term memory loss and the psychological toll of the incident.
In Hazelwood East High School, the district who won a DEI award in 2022 and the school where students beat a girl who’s now in critical condition, just 5% of students are proficient in Math and just 21% in reading.

Kaylee Gain's treatment plan and legal proceedings
Kaylee Gain's recovery regimen includes frequent physical and speech therapy sessions, with plans for further hospitalization to address the unresolved skull issue.
The teen deals with ongoing “trauma, fear, and pain that have arisen from this incident," said Kaemmerer.
Looking ahead, Gain is scheduled for extensive neuropsychological testing to assess the long-term impact of her injuries on her cognitive function. Meanwhile, legal proceedings loom as the 15-year-old suspect arrested for the assault faces a certification hearing.
Gain's family was unable to attend the hearing due to her condition.
Violent school brawl
The harrowing incident occurred near Gain's St Louis High School on March 8, resulting in Gains being left in a coma. Despite awakening several days later, Gain has no recollection of the altercation.
“The family will respect the ruling, regardless of the outcome,” the lawyer claimed.
The attacker's family has claimed self-defense, citing alleged racial threats received after the incident.
