WASHINGTON, DC: Former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway was slammed on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) after she attempted to defend the new reciprocal tariffs announced by President Donald Trump earlier this week by putting a new spin on the subject, HuffPost reported on Friday, April 4.

The POTUS announced his massive tariff plan on approximately 90 nations across the world on Wednesday, April 2, which he dubbed "Liberation Day." The development left the stock market reeling, with more than $6 trillion evaporating from the market since.

"For everyone saying tariffs are a tax, you have to look at them more as the old sanctions," she said, before adding, "The president is trying to compel and incentivize transformative generational changes in behaviour by companies, by categories, by countries, by collection of countries, EU, I'm looking at you."

However, tariffs and sanctions are very different political and economic tools. As per Forbes, tariffs are simply taxes on imports, whereas sanctions placed on a specific product of a country by the US make it illegal for US companies and citizens to buy the product from that specific country.

Kellyanne Conway slammed for using 'alternative facts' to defend Donald Trump's tariffs plan

During the first Donald Trump presidency, Kellyanne Conway had coined the term "alternative facts" to defend the business tycoon against criticism. Reacting her defense of the president's massive tariff hikes, people on social media accused her of doing the same.

"More alternative facts!" wrote an X user.

"Oh, well when she puts it that way I don't mind going broke so rich guys can have ALL the money instead of just most of it," said another.

"The Queen of 'Alternative Facts' has joined the chat!" one person said.

"Alternative facts. Alternative truths. Alternative taxes. Stop Kellyanne please," another shared.

"You can call it anything you want. I will still end up paying much more," noted one individual.

"And that's her Alternative Fact of the Day!" another added.
