Kendra Duggar warns Joseph to stay silent and 'not trust anyone' as legal woes deepen
TONTITOWN, ARKANSAS: Kendra Duggar and Joseph Duggar’s private conversations are shedding light on how the couple is handling a deeply stressful chapter in their lives.
The calls, which began after Joseph was taken into custody on March 20, show a shift in tone over just a few days.
While their early exchanges were cautious, they quickly became more guarded, with Kendra repeatedly urging her husband to be careful about what he says and who he speaks to.
Kendra Duggar warns Joseph Duggar to limit communication
From the beginning, both Kendra and Joseph seemed aware that their conversations could be monitored. In his first call, Joseph made that clear, telling his wife, “Hi, It's Joe here. Just know that we can't talk about a lot on here.”
But by March 23, Kendra’s tone had become more urgent. She began stressing the need to keep their circle tight and avoid unnecessary conversations.
“Just stay focused, We got a lot of moving parts right now, lean in to the people you can, and then, you know, don't, don't go outside that circle,” she told him.
Based on their conversations, that “circle” appeared to include close family members and their legal counsel. Kendra specifically instructed Joseph to only communicate with their attorney in certain situations.
“Make sure that you talk to Travis only in this situation,” she said, referring to Travis Story, a longtime lawyer connected to the family.
Strong warning about trust and outside contacts
One of the most striking moments in the calls came when Kendra confronted Joseph about speaking to someone else while in custody. After initially denying it, Joseph admitted he had made a call.
“Well I called Greg the other morning,” he said.
Kendra’s response was immediate and firm. “Do not talk to Greg whatever you do,” she said, carefully emphasizing each word. “Do not.”
She followed that up with a warning about trust, suggesting that the situation had made her rethink who they could rely on.
“I don't know what's happening, but what I will say is just don't trust anyone. If there's anything I've learned from this, do not trust anyone, that's all I can say,” Kendra told him.
Her concern didn’t stop there. She urged Joseph to be cautious even with people who seemed friendly, adding that they needed to start “boarding up the hatches” and protecting themselves.
Faith, fear and feeling targeted
Throughout their conversations, both Kendra and Joseph appeared to lean on faith as a source of comfort.
Joseph shared that he had been reading Psalm 54, even personalizing it by replacing pronouns with Kendra’s name.
He said the passage brought him “great comfort,” especially as they navigated uncertainty.
At the same time, their words hinted at a sense that they were being targeted or judged by others.
References to “enemies” and “arrogant foes” came up in both calls and messages, reflecting how they were processing the situation emotionally.
Kendra also shared lyrics from a song Joseph loved, “The Truth” by Megan Woods, which speaks about doubt, fear and hearing repeated lies.
Legal challenges continue as court date approaches
The couple is now back together in Arkansas and preparing for a court hearing scheduled for April 29.
The charges they are facing were filed following a search of their home on March 19 by local authorities and the Arkansas Department of Human Services.
Additional charges were filed the following day after further investigation, marking a rapid escalation in their legal situation.
A source close to the family previously stated that the arrest stemmed from a home inspection, specifically noting issues related to door locks being placed on the exterior of doors.
