JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA: Social media is a double-edged sword. While it keeps you connected to that high school friend who moved to Alaska, it also turns us into coffee shop hermits who can’t put down our phones long enough to acknowledge the person sitting right next to us.

Still, there are times when the internet delivers moments of pure comedy gold. One such moment unfolded ahead of the 2025 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl — and it was as unexpected as it was hilarious.

Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin's hilarious exchange with fan

The Ole Miss Rebels capped off their season with a commanding 52-20 victory over the Duke Blue Devils on January 2, Thursday, leading from wire to wire to finish their 2024 campaign at 10-3 (5-3). But even before the game kicked off, head coach Lane Kiffin found himself at the center of a social media exchange that had fans buzzing.

Kiffin has been vocal about his disdain for the College Football Playoff Committee’s decision to snub SEC schools, Whiskey Riff noted.

To be fair, the committee’s choice doesn’t look half bad in hindsight. After all, Alabama—presumably on the playoff bubble—was steamrolled by Michigan, an underdog who defied expectations. But that didn’t stop Kiffin from voicing his frustrations, and as it turns out his commentary set the stage for a rather hilarious exchange no one saw coming.

It all started with a bold proposition from a fan going by the username Sgt Blackout. Apparently, he figured Kiffin was so confident in his team’s ability to cover the -17.5 spread against Duke that he’d be willing to put something personal on the line.

The deal? If Ole Miss failed to cover, Sgt Blackout wanted a date with Kiffin’s 20-year-old daughter, Landry.

“Let’s make a bet Lane Kiffin. If you guys don’t cover -17.5 today, I get to take your daughter on a date to my local @Chilis," the fan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Lane Kiffin’s clapback and Sgt Blackout’s second pitch

Anyone would think Lane Kiffin would ignore such a ridiculous challenge. After all, what’s in it for him? His team was already favored to win big, and there was no way he’d honor a date-for-a-loss bet with a stranger.

But Lane Kiffin's response was as sharp as it was dismissive.

“She isn’t a Chilis girl,” he quipped, adding a laughing emoji for good measure.

That should’ve been the end of it, but it wasn't.

Refusing to be shut down, Sgt Blackout saw an opportunity. If he couldn’t take Landry to Chili's, maybe he could share a beer with the coach himself. So he revised his offer.

“Fine, I’ll settle for you and me go there and talk transfer portal talent over some beers then," he responded.

It was a decent pivot, but Lane Kiffin wasn’t the only one with a quick wit in the family.

Landry Kiffin joins the fray

Landry Kiffin, the very subject of the original bet, entered the conversation. At 20 years old, she’s proving she’s every bit as sharp as her father as she responded to the fan’s second offer.

“He isn’t a beer guy,” Landry quipped.

But Sgt Blackout wasn’t giving up that easily. Determined to keep the banter alive, he fired back with a bold claim: “I can change that. Just one night is all I need.”

While the banter provided plenty of humor, it was Ole Miss who had the last laugh. The Rebels didn’t just cover the -17.5 spread—they obliterated it. Their 52-20 domination over Duke capped off an impressive season, giving Kiffin a 10-3 record and silencing any doubts about his team’s prowess.

As for Sgt Blackout, it remains to be seen whether he's lucky enough to actually score a date with Landry or a beer with Kiffin.
