Larry David says he will ‘never forgive’ 'brother' Richard Lewis for making him cry as he mourns his loss
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Larry David was overcome with emotion after hearing the news of his longtime friend and collaborator Richard Lewis’ death due to a heart attack.
'The Curb Your Enthusiasm' stars shared a bond that went beyond comedy.
Larry David says Richard Lewis was both funny and sweet
Larry David, 76, released a statement to USA Today on Wednesday, February 28, expressing his grief and admiration for Lewis, who died at 76 from a heart attack.
"Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” David said.
“He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him,” he added.
Lewis’ publicist confirmed his death in a statement saying that he “passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles last night.”
Lary Davis and Richard Lewis played fictional versions of themselves on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'
Lewis and David had a long history of working together on the hit HBO series 'Curb Your Enthusiasm', where they played fictional versions of themselves.
Lewis appeared in more than 40 episodes of the show which was created by David.
Lewis had to take a break from the show in 2021 due to his health issues, but he later returned for a cameo in season 11 and more episodes in season 12, which is currently airing on HBO.
HBO also mourned Lewis’ death in a statement, saying that he was “a cherished member of the HBO and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ families” and that his “comedic brilliance, wit and talent were unmatched.”
Lary David and Richard Lewis joked about their wills in a recent episode
Lewis and David joked about their wills on the last episode of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' earlier this month, Us Weekly noted.
David told Lewis that he was leaving him some money in his will, to which Lewis replied, “When I die, I want you to know how much I cared about you. You’re my best friend. You’re getting it," the publication noted.
David tried to decline the offer, but Lewis insisted. Later in the episode, David realized that Lewis was expecting him to reciprocate the gesture.
“You know, it’s kind of starting to dawn on me what’s going on. You’re putting me in your will because you want me to put you in my will,” David said.
Lewis denied it and then mocked David for thinking that he would die first. “You’re a little ragged right now. I’m in a little better shape than you. You think that? Oh really. I’m going to outlive you by 20 years,” Lewis said.
Lewis is survived by his wife Joyce Lapinsky, whom he married in 2005.
