'National embarrassment': Lauren Boebert trolled after being accused of assaulting ex-husband
DENVER, COLORADO: Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) became the focus of an active police investigation following an alleged physical altercation with her ex-husband, Jayson Boebert, at Miner’s Claim restaurant in her district on Saturday night, January 6.
The Silt Police Department has confirmed an ongoing investigation but has refrained from offering additional details. A spokesperson for Boebert has asserted that no arrests were made in connection with the incident.
Social media spotlight
The controversy came to light when an anti-Boebert super PAC, 'American Muckrakers', took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday night to publicize the incident. Jayson Boebert later verified the accuracy of the details, accusing his ex-wife of physically assaulting him. He claimed that he was a “victim of domestic violence".
Jayson Boebert initially reported that the police were too aggressive with him but later retracted his statement, expressing respect for law enforcement. “I respect our officers and appreciate what they have to endure. I shouldn’t have said anything negative toward them. I was unhappy," he said.
Lauren Boebert denies all allegations of domestic violence and has pledged to consult her lawyer regarding the false claims made against her.
In an official statement released on Sunday, Boebert remarked, “This is a sad situation for all that keeps escalating and another reason I’m moving. I didn’t punch Jayson in the face and no one was arrested. I will be consulting with my lawyer about the false claims he made against me and evaluate all of my legal options.”
Boebert recently announced plans to move to a more conservative district for her 2024 re-election bid. While the specific claims remain unverified, the congresswoman's aide provided additional details about the events leading up to the altercation.
Unverified details
The aide explained that the confrontation began when Lauren Boebert went to her ex-husband's house to pick up their son. Later, at Miner's Claim, Jayson Boebert allegedly started “being disrespectful,” “being an asshole,” and getting “lewd,” resulting in a physical altercation.
According to the aide, Jayson Boebert purportedly made an aggressive move toward his ex-wife, attempting to grab her. Lauren Boebert, in an effort to defend herself, put her hand in his face and on his nose, according to the aide.
While social media posts described a violent confrontation with the congresswoman landing two punches on her ex-husband's nose, the aide maintained Boebert's stance that no punching took place.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Jayson Boebert admitted to overreacting and expressed a desire for resolution.
“I made a mistake. We both overreacted. I only want what’s best for [the] boys and I still love her very much. We both share some hurt deep down inside ... It seems we just keep pushing each other further apart," he told the Daily Beast.
“I want the best for her. It’s probably just best that I remain silent," Jayson added.
Internet shreds Rep Lauren Boebert
Rep Lauren Boebert was trolled on social media after the allegations surfaced.
"I’ll say it again: Lauren Boebert is a national embarrassment and this is her last term as a member of Congress," one posted on X.
"I take it the divorce proceedings are not going well," another wrote.
"That does not disqualify her, unfortunately. The RNC may still back her in CO-4," a user remarked.
"LOCK HER UP," a comment read.
"At this pace, republicans will lose majority in the house before the next elections," another quipped.
