Leonardo DiCaprio faces backlash for fleeing LA wildfires on private jet: 'First rate hypocrite'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Leonardo DiCaprio is under fire for reportedly escaping the devastating Los Angeles wildfires on a private jet with his girlfriend, model Vittoria Ceretti.
The actor reportedly fled to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Friday, as the fires continued to ravage Southern California.
Leonardo DiCaprio's escape in private jet amid fires brings focus on his climate activism
Leonardo DiCaprio is a known environmental activist. In 1998, he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which has contributed more than $80 million to promote sustainability and address climate change.
Despite this, private jets are significantly more polluting than commercial flights, emitting five to 14 times more pollutants per passenger, according to Airport Technology.
The Academy Award winner was joined by his father, George DiCaprio, and stepmother, Peggy Ann Farrar, during the evacuation, The Mirror reported.
Leonardo DiCaprio's environmental advocacy questioned amid controversy
The wildfires have claimed 24 lives and forced over 100,000 people to evacuate their homes.
Several properties have been destroyed, including those of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Milo Ventimiglia and others. Efforts to combat the fires have involved extensive resources. US military aircraft have dropped over 16,000 gallons of fire suppressant over the weekend.
Moreover, 1,800 California National Guardsmen have been activated to assist in containment, Pentagon spokesman Maj Gen Pat Ryder said, according to CNN.
Over 12,000 structures remain at risk, with evacuation orders still in place across areas like Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and Calabasas.
