Payne, 31, tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, leaving Kate to grieve from thousands of miles away.

“She’s grieving,” Kate Cassidy’s father told the New York Post on the morning of October 17, as he stood at the door of their family home in Harrington Park, New Jersey.

The anguish was clear on his face as he recounted the events of the past few hours. “I’ve been up all night,” he said, clearly overwhelmed by the weight of the tragedy.

Cassidy's father, who referred to his daughter as Kaitlin, confirmed that she was not at home when the news broke.

“Kaitlin's not even here. She's down in Florida,” he shared, explaining that his daughter had been in Argentina with Payne but returned to the US shortly before the tragedy.

The tight-knit suburban neighborhood has also been rocked by the news.

The 'Sunshine' singer and Cassidy first went public with their relationship in 2022 when they were seen at a Halloween party dressed as the '90s couple Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson. They made their red carpet debut together at the British Fashion Awards in December of that same year, as per E! News.

The couple frequently shared glimpses of their relationship with Cassidy's 200,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram, where she often posted about her adventures with Payne, as well as food, travel, and fashion.

In late August, Cassidy, 25, and Payne attended a wedding in France, where Cassidy shared a TikTok of them dancing in formal attire. She later posted highlights from their trip to Paris and their visit to Costa Navarino, Greece.

Neighbor expresses sympathy for Kate Cassidy's grieving family

One of the Cassidys' neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed sympathy for the grieving family, according to the New York Post.

“It’s so sad. I really felt for them when I read it this morning,” the neighbor said, reflecting on the sudden loss.

The neighbor described the Cassidys as “a nice family” but remarked that Kate, now 25, had a rebellious streak in her younger years.

“Kate was a bit of a wild one,” he remarked, recalling how she would meet her girlfriends behind their homes, shedding layers of clothing to evade her parents’ more conservative, traditional Irish values.

“Her parents were so strict,” he added.

Speaking highly of Kate’s father, the neighbor referred to him as “a nice, old-school working-class guy,” while her mother was described as “just a traditional, nice Irish lady who goes back to Ireland once a year. They’re just nice people, a nice family.”

The neighbor found it difficult to comprehend the circumstances surrounding Payne’s tragic death, which reportedly happened after a drug-fueled incident on Wednesday night.

“I just can’t understand it. Why is somebody who has everything, such a young guy in his thirties, why would he throw it all away like that? I don’t — I can’t understand that.”

Cassidy had traveled to Argentina for a short vacation with Payne before returning to Florida, unknowingly leaving behind the last moments of their time together.
