Lip reader reveals what Pedro Pascal told Joaquin Phoenix

The baffling interaction took place on Friday, May 16, when Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix joined their co-stars Emma Stone and Austin Butler for the premiere of their latest film ‘Eddington’ at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

At the red carpet, as cast members greeted fans with a twinkling smile, the ‘Joker’ star raised his hand to greet the crowd, but Pascal gently pulled it down and whispered something in his ear.

Pascal’s move left Phoenix completely shocked, but he just said "okay" and slipped his hand back in his pocket.

After a video of the incident went viral online, internet users suspected that the ‘The Gladiator II’ actor was worried that Phoenix's wave might have unintentionally looked like the Nazi salute.

However, lip reader NJ Hickling claimed that Pascal told Phoenix, both 50, he was "affecting the cred" before advising him to "act cool."

"Argh, don’t do that. You’re affecting the cred. Try and act cool, like you’re about to score, my man," Pascal told Phoenix, according to Hickling.

The 'Joker' star, ever the introspective soul, paused for just a beat. "His mouth forms the words: 'Oh, enough,’" Hickling told the Daily Mail. Although it appears to be a response to Pascal, Phoenix is actually speaking to himself as well.

A flicker of self-awareness washes over him. Then, quietly, almost to no one in particular, he breathes, "Oh my goodness."

Pedro Pascal fuels plastic surgery rumors

Notably, this interaction was not the only reason Pedro Pascal made headlines at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. ‘The Mandalorian’ star also sparked plastic surgery rumors at the airport in Nice, France, ahead of the event.

He donned a casual look for the day by adding a $3,300 Bottega Veneta khaki jacket with the luxury house's signature woven leather collar. However, it was his sharp jaw and "younger" look that got the people talking.

“Oh that surgeon is GOOD,” one X user posed, while another wrote, “Oh that neck lift did him well!”

“It's amazing how skinny he looks here vs when he's on a show or something... wonder if he's lost weight recently,” one person shared.
