Mandy Moore says marriage at 24 left her hollow and isolated as she was in ‘very unhealthy relationship’
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mandy Moore has opened up about her troubled marriage to Ryan Adams at the age of 24.
The actress and singer revealed how the relationship affected her self-esteem, career, and family.
Mandy Moore married Ryan Adams in response to her parents’ divorce
On the February 6 episode of the 'Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson' podcast, Mandy Moore shared that she married Ryan Adams in 2009 as a way of coping with her parents’ split.
She said, “I think it was like, a direct response to my own parents splitting up. They had been together obviously since they were like 16 or something and I was so heartbroken and I believed that I found myself in a relationship with somebody that I was like, ‘Oh, I can make a family with this person for this person.'”
She added, “It was obviously not the right situation by any means.”

Mandy Moore, who is now 39, said that her marriage to Ryan Adams, who is 49, took a toll on her life and career. She said that she considered quitting Hollywood to focus on her personal life.
“This seemed like a perfectly appropriate time to get married and focus on this very personal, quiet chapter in my life,” she said, adding “Ultimately, it just left me in a really hollow, empty, isolated place.”
She also said that she struggled with low self-esteem and felt the need to make herself smaller for her husband.

“The feeling of belittling yourself or making yourself as small as possible to make others around you feel as comfortable as possible,” she said, “was something that started obviously at a young age for me and continued through that very unhealthy relationship that I was in.”
Mandy Moore accused Ryan Adams of manipulation and abuse
Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams divorced in 2016 after six years of marriage. In 2019, Mandy Moore was one of seven women who spoke out against Ryan Adams in a New York Times expose, alleging that he was manipulative and abusive, as per People.
She said that he controlled her music career and prevented her from releasing new songs for a decade. She said, “Music was a point of control for him.”
Ryan Adams denied the allegations at first, calling the "characterization" of their relationship "completely inconsistent with his view," but later apologized in 2020, saying that he regretted his past behavior.
Mandy Moore has moved on and found happiness with Taylor Goldsmith
Mandy Moore, who is known for her roles in 'This Is Us', 'A Walk to Remember', and 'Dr Death', said that she has grown a lot since her marriage to Taylor Goldsmith in 2018.
She said, that she is "just an entirely different person I don’t recognize. I don’t relate to it all. I can’t even put myself into those shoes again.”
They have two sons, August, two, and Oscar, 15 months. She said, “I’m grateful for all it taught me and where it brought me and ultimately, it led me to finding this incredible partner."
