WASHINGTON, DC: Marco Rubio took to X on Saturday, January 10, to announce an update from the Department of State. He reshared a post by the DOS about Donald Trump’s withdrawal from several international organizations.

Rubio stated that the message was clear: That it was no longer acceptable to invest American tax dollars in institutions that were unable to show results, accountability, or respect for American interests.

The original post by the DOS stated that it was rejecting the “outdated multilateralism” that treated the American taxpayer like the world’s “underwriter for a sprawling architecture of global governance.”

Speaking of Trump’s withdrawal, the post said that it marked the end of the “era of writing blank checks” to international bureaucracies.

Marco Rubio criticizes 'ineffective' international institutions

Marco Rubio issued a statement through the State Department, praising America’s central role in shaping the international order. It stated that the US had played a significant role, from formulating the Monroe Doctrine to the establishment of the United Nations.

“From serving as the primary security guarantor under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and as the world’s largest humanitarian donor, America’s leadership has been unquestionable,” the statement read.

Rubio noted that sometimes great leadership meant making difficult choices and recognizing when the institutions that were meant to promise peace, prosperity, and liberty had become the cause of the problem.

He wrote that what people knew as the international system had been overrun with numerous opaque organizations, and that even those that once served the world well had started to become ineffective.

He added that the same organizations meant to be conflict resolvers had become the obstacle.

“The era of writing blank checks to international bureaucracies is over,” the statement announced.

Rubio revealed that earlier this week, President Donald Trump had announced America’s withdrawal from 66 international organizations that the Trump administration found to be “wasteful, ineffective, and harmful.”

Marco Rubio calls out several UN sectors

During the statement, Marco Rubio stated that there had been several UN factors, including the Population Fund and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, that had boasted a consistent record of dysfunction, “if not outright malice.”

He said that American citizens and those who looked to America to lead them deserved better and said that the nation’s continuous collaboration with such organizations did not reflect well on American values, nor did it serve the country’s interests.

Rubio stated that although the withdrawal had been considered after lengthy reviews, it did not mean that America was going to turn its back on the world.
