NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Within 20 minutes of starting the impeachment trial of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Senate Democrats swiftly processed motions and voted to dismiss the initial article of impeachment against him.

In light of these developments, conservative commentator Mark Levin took to his X account, writing, "Dismissing an impeachment trial is unprecedented and usurps the Constitution’s impeachment clause".

Levin further highlighted in his post, "Conviction is a high bar but dismissal by a mere majority makes a trial impossible going forward if the party is the same as the impeached individual. It eviscerates what the framers intended."

On April 16, the US House had delivered two impeachment charges against Mayorkas to the Senate.

These charges allegedly stemmed from allegations related to the ongoing border crisis, with the Republican-controlled House voting to impeach Mayorkas back in February.

The following day, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, announced that a debate would take place.

However, shortly after the proceedings began, Schumer moved to dismiss both articles of impeachment without engaging in any debate.

He argued that the articles were unconstitutional, did not meet the threshold of high crime and misdemeanor, and therefore should be dismissed.

Despite several motions being filed, all of which failed along party lines with a vote of 51-49, the Senate ultimately voted to dismiss the first article of impeachment.

The vote was 51 to 48, with Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voting present. The first article, brought by the Republican-controlled House, accused Mayorkas of "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law."

Senator Eric Schmitt, a Republican from Missouri, was the first senator to object to the dismissal of the first article.
