"My wife, who cannot be here tonight," McConaughey begins, acknowledging Alves as the chief officer and co-creator of Pantalones. He humorously points out that he's seated alone because she couldn't make it, playfully mentioning that he's "here one-legged tonight because she is not here".
'Our favorite drink is tequila'
The heart of the story lies in a chance encounter that occurred 17 years ago when McConaughey and Alves first crossed paths over tequila.
"Camila and I met over tequila 17 years ago, and I made her a margarita," he reveals, setting the stage for a romantic connection. The actor recalls that on that memorable night, a unique "language of love" unfolded, with McConaughey surprisingly finding himself fluent in Spanish and understanding Alves's Portuguese better than ever before.
Their shared love for tequila became a pivotal part of their relationship. "Our favorite drink is tequila. We have it very consistently in our life. So we said let's make our own favorite tequila," McConaughey said with a smile, highlighting the importance of the spirit in their journey together.
Birth of Pantalones
With a foundation laid in their shared love for tequila, McConaughey and Alves decided to create their own. After 47 tasting tests and nearly two years of experimentation, Pantalones Organic Tequila was born. McConaughey proudly states, "We have a badass juice in this bottle."
The couple's goal was not just to create an exceptional tequila but also to inject a sense of fun into the experience. McConaughey notes that tequila, in recent years, has taken a serious turn, with some becoming self-proclaimed tequila snobs. However, Pantalones defies this trend.
"Tequila in the last 5, 10 years has gotten kind of serious. I mean, some people are tequila snobs. And we were like, no, no, no, no no, no, not tequila. You keep that for the wine. For tequila, let's have some fun," McConaughey explains.
However, in the spirit of celebration, McConaughey raises his glass once more, toasting, "Let's cheers to making more good things."
