LONDON, ENGLAND: English broadcaster Piers Morgan and American journalist Megyn Kelly engaged in a heated debate over Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show during an appearance on 'Piers Morgan Uncensored', which aired on Monday, February 9.
Kelly expressed strong disapproval of the Puerto Rican artist performing entirely in Spanish, framing it as a slight against America. She emphasized her belief that the halftime show should be performed in English to reflect American culture and unity.
Piers Morgan responds to Megyn Kelly over Bad Bunny criticism
During her discussion with Morgan following the Super Bowl, Kelly made it clear that she felt Bad Bunny’s performance was a political statement. She focused on his history of criticizing President Donald Trump, particularly regarding immigration policies.
Kelly said, “It’s about him. It’s about him being chosen as the Super Bowl performer, Somebody who’s been an outspoken critic, of course, of the Trump administration and of America and our anti-immigrant policies."
She continued, "This is long before the current controversy over ICE. He doesn’t want illegals deported from this country. Well, too bad, because the majority of Americans do want that and are not shy about pushing for it. And that’s why President Trump got elected.”
Kelly then also drew in Green Day and Jay-Z into her tirade: " So, he and his little buddies over at Green Day never miss a chance to bash the United States of America. He got selected because Jay-Z, for some reason, has got the choice over who performs at our Super Bowl, who's another problem.
Kelly criticized the performance for being entirely in Spanish, stating, “I’m sorry, Piers, but to get up there and perform the whole show in Spanish is a middle finger to the rest of America. Who gives a damn that we have 40 million Spanish speakers in the United States?"
She further claimed, "We have 310 million who don’t speak a lick of Spanish. This is supposed to be a unifying event for the country, not for the Latinos, not for one small group, but for the country.”
Kelly added, “We don’t need a Black National Anthem, we don’t need a Spanish-speaking non-English performing performer, and we don’t need an ICE or America hater featured as our half-time entertainment!”
When Morgan asked about the national language of the United States, Kelly said English, though Morgan pointed out there is no official language law.
Kelly acknowledged this, noting that “people are pushing to make it official,” referencing Trump’s executive action from last March.
Megyn Kelly defends traditional American culture
Morgan defended the performance, saying it was perfectly acceptable and highlighted moments of unity, including a real-life marriage during the show, which he suggested conservatives might appreciate.
Kelly then extended her criticism beyond language to cultural identity, arguing that the Super Bowl should remain a “quintessentially American” event.
She proclaimed, “This attitude that we have right here is why you in Great Britain have lost your culture! You ceded your culture to a bunch of radical Muslims who came in and took over, and now it’s gone."
She emphasized that in the United States, she does not want Hispanic or Muslim cultural influences to dominate American traditions.
Kelly said, “The halftime show and everything around it needs to stay quintessentially American, not Spanish, not Muslim, not anything other than good old-fashioned American apple pie. There should be a meatloaf, maybe some fried chicken, and an English-speaking performer. That’s what the Super Bowl should be.”
As a response to Bad Bunny’s halftime performance, Turning Point USA offered its 'All-American' Super Bowl halftime show, featuring Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett.
That stream had 20.12 million views on YouTube as of Monday morning, February 9, compared with 28.43 million views for Bad Bunny’s official halftime show, which does not include figures from NBC or Peacock broadcasts.
