Mel Gibson ‘surprised’ by Donald Trump naming him Hollywood ambassador
Hearing about the announcement, Mel Gibson said, “I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call."
"My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can. Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?" he added, per People. The 'Braveheart' actor recently lost his Malibu home to the Palisades fire.
Trump, 78, announced the appointments via his Truth Social platform on January 16, stating that the trio would act as his "eyes and ears" in Hollywood.
“They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE,” he said.
Trump added, “It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood.”
The three actors have shown consistent support for Trump in the past, per Fox News Digital. Voight, 86, received the National Medal of the Arts from Trump in 2019 and has described him as “the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln".
Gibson, 69, made headlines for saluting Trump at a 2021 UFC event and for his remarks questioning Vice President Kamala Harris' intelligence.
Stallone, 78, previously likened Trump to George Washington, saying during a Mar-A-Lago speech, “We got the second George Washington.”
The Trump administration will feature several special envoys with backgrounds in entertainment. In December, President-elect Trump revealed on Truth Social that Mark Burnett, the British TV producer behind 'The Apprentice', would serve as his special envoy to the United Kingdom.
Trump stated that Burnett's role would involve strengthening diplomatic ties by concentrating on shared priorities such as trade, investment, and cultural collaboration.
Trump's second inauguration is scheduled for January 20 in Washington, DC, with a Make America Great Again Victory Rally planned for 3 pm on January 19 at Capital One Arena.
Describing the rally as "a victory celebration you'll always remember", this marks his first event in Washington, DC, since the rally preceding the Capitol incident on January 6, 2021.
