Melania calls childhood under communism 'beautiful,' as Trump continues to campaign against it

WASHINGTON, DC: First lady Melania Trump on Wednesday, September 23, said that she had a “very beautiful childhood” growing up under communist rule in what is now Slovenia, while also acknowledging that life was less free than it is in the United States.

Melania made the comments in an interview with Fox News, even as President Donald Trump has increasingly used communism as a line of attack against Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections in November. The first lady had been asked about her childhood while discussing her efforts to help reunite Ukrainian children with their families.

Melania Trump, who was born in 1970 in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, grew up in the former Yugoslavia under the country's communist-led socialist system. The now-first lady appeared on Fox & Friends, where co-host Brian Kilmeade asked her why Eastern Europeans who experienced communism may have a different understanding of freedom and liberty.

Melania responded that her childhood was positive despite the restrictions of the political system under which she was raised.

“I grew up under communism, and actually, I didn't miss anything. I feel I had a very beautiful childhood, and my parents provided a beautiful life for my family,” Melania said.

However, she also acknowledged that people living under the system had to be conscious of their behavior and that it was not comparable to the level of freedom she experiences in the United States.

“But yes, there are certain things you need to be aware of, and you watch over what you do, it's not as free as here in the United States. Now it's a different time, but when I was growing up, it was not,” she said.

Melania made the remarks during a broader discussion of her efforts to help return Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia during the ongoing war.

“We have a direct channel with Russia and with Ukraine,” she said, adding that her focus was on reuniting as many children as possible with their parents.

Melania spent her childhood and teenage years in socialist Yugoslavia, which was led for decades by communist leader Josip Broz Tito. Slovenia became an independent country in 1991, when Melania was 21.

Trump steps up anti-communist rhetoric ahead of midterms

Trump has also repeatedly invoked communism while criticizing Democrats and progressive candidates during the run-up to the November midterm elections. At the Republican Party's midterm convention in Dallas earlier this month, Trump said Democratic candidates who describe themselves as democratic socialists were actually communists. The president also warned that a Democratic victory could result in what he called a “communist caucus.”

Trump has continued to use the issue repeatedly in recent campaign appearances, including a rally in North Carolina earlier this month as well, where he accused Democrats of embracing communism.
